I can honestly say I would not have signed him. He only had one good season and when I started to take the piss out of a mate of mine who supports them he was really not bothered telling me he had been to nearly every match that season and he believed it was one of those seasons where the ball simply landed at his feet from 5 yards out for nearly each one of the goals. I carried on the WUM with him thinking it was purley sour grapes, he told me "You will see" and bet me we would not get 10 goals out of him.... We should have sold him or even allowed him join another team on a free when we had the chance, now after his loan spell and still no goals nobody is going to touch him with a barge pole.
a free for a guy who scored 29 goals the previous season, he was class against us at elland road, just goes to show how a big club affects players
Mate, i've seen enough of Paynter before he came to us to tell you he was/is gash. you got to remember we never had the best deffence in the first place & even if he isnt great a big man can wreck havoc in the box just by being there. Unfortunately theres no room for passengers in any team in the championship and any club with ambition would have taken a punt on Cox/Austin who both partnered Paynter & actually looked dangerous. YWBK I will take your point on board that he looked very good against us twice but our scouting should have picked up that it was a flash in the pan season for Paynter & we wont hit the dizzy heights of 20 plus goals again especially not in a harder league
Cheers. I think his confidence has been shattered and he is clearly out of his depth in this league. A good League 1 player but nothing more. Maybe he does deserve one more chance to prove himself but to be honest I'd even play Forssell over him. I was hoping that the rumoured swap deal from the summer with Sheffield United giving us Montgomery or Quinn for him might surface again...
Do you know what, I've been thinking that! But how bad must our current CB's be if Paynter can do a better job & would that demoralise everyone as well? Still, worth a punt in on of the many behind closed doors friendlies we play these days afterall, we are still paying his wages!
Not even that, it was a flash in the pan one season wonder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Paynter No more chances, 10 games for Brighton no goals 23 for us and one goal, it would be just our luck Grayson plays him against Ipswich he gets a winner then it takes another 6-7 games before Grayson realises it was a law of average fluke and drops him again
Becchio has to be dropped for me, been awful, but because he has done well for us previously he deserves a starting slot? No. Forsell is terrible, only thing I've seen him do is miss an open goal v Burnley. Grayson seems to like having a big man up top, and they don't come much bigger than Paynter. Its all about Paynter
Paynter does not have a fantastic scoring record, and remember a large number of his Swindon goals came from penalties. At Lge One level he got a lot of chances due to mistakes and bad marking, and Swindon had two wingers constantly putting crosses in, which is something he hasn't had at Leeds. I feel he can't come good for us anymore, and he will end up back in a lower division team scoring goals at a level that suits him. He's no Ricky Lambert!
