After all where do we need more depth ? center back was a problem but Martin has played really well ( should have scored yesterday though) we also have Turnball coming through . Kelvin is only 35 and Bat is an able sub ( Jack Dovey looks good) .Full backs we probably have the strongest selection with Richardson and Fox able to cover the midfield positions as well ( Stephens and Shaw coming through) midfield very strong with the 4 first teamers and youth. Lallana can be covered by Holmes , Fox or McQueen. Chaplow on the right covered by Stevie or even Sam Hoskins or Sinclair . Up front we have Lambert who most other fans see as a big lump of a target man ( we know different, but shush) with Guly, Connoly and Barnyard (Sinclair coming through) Abit long winded but I see no reason to look at the likes of Hooper who will want twice the money of our top earners
how can you rely on academy players with hardly any experience to push us through the rest of the season and get us promoted? is this a wum?
Holmes has already been told he can move on hasn't he?, we need reinforcements. Our squad depth is kind of on the thin side, we can not rely on the youth to patch the holes in our squad. Yes some are ready to step up to the squad but some aren't. I do not want the same scenario as in the past. Where we were forced into playing them. It damaged some of the youngsters progression, being put in the first team when they weren't ready. I would rather they progress at their own rate.
Yes, we do need to strengthen the squad. There has to be one eye on what happens after promotion, assuming it is achieved. The squad isn't good enough, im my opinion, to comfortably stay in the Premier League. I'm not just assuming that promotion will be achieved. It may not. But the last time Saints budgeted for failure, they achieved precisely that. One either strengthens now, and gives some of the new players we'll need time to bed in, or after promotion is achieved, when 6, 7 or 8 new players may be required, they'll all have to fit in at once. I know which way I'd prefer to grow.
It all depends on what you want. If you're happy with a play-off place, then further signings aren't needed. If you want us to go all our for automatic, then signings are. Don't forget that our form before yesterday was very poor. We've had injuries and suspensions right through the team, and we badly suffered as a result. One win (vs Forest) and one signing (Lee) doesn't suddenly change this. With all due respect, the likes of Forte and Holmes and Reeves are not going to get us a top 2 spot.
I agree with Brendy. Other than West Ham I think at our strongest we have the best starting 11 in the league. We just don't have enough depth, and need to add another 1 or 2 players before the summer.
WTF!! We need players have you not just seen the blip we just had. we can just rush these youth players into the team. start losing fans get on their backs then they lose all confidence and turn out rubbish. IDIOT. hardly any of them have played 90 mins for the first team, let alone playing against top championship side with the pressure on them to get promoted.
Calm down chaps he's entitled to his opinion. Point is kids can't play every week or they burn out> We do need a couple of additions to give us the depth we need to win this league imo.
Even the best kids won't be playing major roles this season unless we go on a highly unlikely winning run and win the league with several games to go. The fact is that the kids need a senior player to usurp to get the best out of themselves and the team. Throwing the kids in too soon simply because we're short is unlikely to work at our level. In L1 we may have gotten away with it. The PL and Championship are pretty unforgiving and with only 5 subs, it will be hard to incorporate youth players this season.
If we were mid table, then I would agree wholeheartedly. But, if our target is to win this league/gain promotion, then we need more cover. As for people being rude to the guy, its not like he's saying we should sell all the experienced players & then play total football, so don't get your pants in such a twist.
Its a decent post - not a wum or idiot. Look at Leicester - bringing in a large number of players doesnt always work - time to find right balance and gel as a team. However - we will never be in such a good position for auto promotion and a bit more strength in depth will really help us through what is a long 46 game marathon. Lets have proven match winners we can bring off the bench or tighten up if we need to. Agree we must let our youngsters develop in their own time and it would be nice to see some becoming more regular features as time goes by.
