Before we get to the signings, I think some of the players we let go shouldve stayed. One of either aqualani or miereles had to be retained just to have another dimension to our midfield. Right now all our midfield players seem to play the same way. I recall the arsenal game when we were struggling to break them down until Suarez and miereles came on which made a difference. Signings: Carrol: He was injured when we bought him and we all agree he wasn't worth what we paid. For that amount Bayern would've sold Mario Gomez to us. Big big mistake by Kenny. Henderson: I don't see what he contributes to the team at all. He's just there. Definitely not an improvement from aqualani or miereles and to think that we spent 16mil on him. I understand that we wanna go back to the Liverpool of old that used to pass and move but the game has changed so much that pace and ball retention is key. Enrique loves the ball on his feet which is exactly what we need, someone who retains the ball so well in the middle of the park similar to silva & nasri at city. We need a striker and a creative midfielder asap cause we don't have anyone that's creative in the 20 midfielders we have. Thoughts? Theres a good
Bayern wouldn't have sold Gomez at the time. We nearly signed him on loan in August 2010, but we couldn't come to an agreement on the loan fee I believe (read it in the daily post) then he went into the team and hit a brilliant run of form. Don't know who we could get for £35m really. Aguero wanted CL football and earns double what Carroll does a week (and more).
Llorente turned us down as well. We should have just waited and made smarter moves in the summer ( Carroll for 15 much better price and could have seen him in the second half of the season).
Who should have stayed is a pointless discussion unless you are looking for reasons to sack Kenny. As I've said in other threads: while we can't machine gun approach transfers like city (keeping buying & youre bound to get it right) we also have to admit that we'll never get it right every time. So again: If the transfers from this year that have been Sh*te so far stay that way (& I don't include Henderson ) we might finish in same league position, hopefully win a cup (& guaranteeing Europe) & only IMO be a striker, 2 wide men & possibly a midfield playmaker away from a league winning 1st eleven(competitive I mean by that) with reasonable back up in all positions, most of which in their early twenties & some academy prospects!!!! I'd personally have patience for another 2 years & still accept a few more transfer mistakes if we eventually get it. Question is: does everyone agree with me that this management team will get it?
Couldn't disagree more with your point about Henderson. The lad has played well in each game he's played in, and he is young so he will be there for the foreseeable future.
Henderson, Enrique and Bellamy are good signings. Kenny came in to raise the spirit of the club and help us make a U turn in our fortunes. He is not the man for the long term who will bring us league success.
Exactly: I think some people have rose tinted glasses when looking back at for example Gerrard; I remember plenty of games in his younger years when he "disappeared" for a game, seemed quiet, just like Henderson. & Henderson gets to perfect his art with Gerrard beside him!y Now Downing on the other hand lol.... And Adam just looks like either he's not fit enough or makes so many bad runs he's too knackered to make the right one. Carroll looks disillusioned to be honest; I have a wee bit of sympathy but he should talk to Lucas: if ever a guy walked through the storm....
It is funny how in July we had amazing depth in Midfield with Lucas, Meireles, Aquilani, Spearing, Gerrard, Poulson, Shelvey, Henderson, Adam, J.Cole, Downing, Maxi, Kuyt.. Arguably the 2 most creative players in there being Meireles and Aqualini, who both of course got sold but never truely replaced.. Gerrard is the only one who can consistently create chances aswell as them 2. Adam is a good player but he is made great with Lucas next to him due to his awful positional sense. We need to start playing to our midfields strengths a bit more, we know there is quality in midfield but when we set up like we did against Stoke we're always going to be less sharp.
we haven't sold aquilani have we? i thought he was on yet another loan move. now HE was a total waste of money-£20 million and only had one season (injured for most of it) and nothing else. need to sell, get some money back and invest. henderson, imo, is coming along well. he's played some wonderful through balls that have been wasted and has played solid and tidy in midfield. other than that i'll stay stum, we're a work in progress.
