What did everyone think? Obviously Best isnt a winger but did a decent job, Jonas in a free role worked well I thought and solves the problem of Ben Arfa/defending. Do you think we should/will play it with Cabaye/Tiote/Ba back?

We should try that, except like this -

    Jonas--------------Best---------------HBA

    ---Guthrie--Cabaye--Raylor/Gosling----

    Santon------Colo-------Willo----Simpson

    -----------------Krul----------------

With someone who can actually perform in the centre of the forward trio it would be excellent.
Ba is capable of playing on the left of a 4-3-3 if Football Manager is to be believed so I wouldn't be averse to playing it with the magic trio back.

I reckon it could, but it would have to be tweaked like this:

    Tiote
    Abeid/Guthrie/Vuckic Cabaye
    HBA Ba Gutierrez

But, when we're defending, whoever's playing beside Cabaye has to become a right-wingish role, covering Simpson, while Jonas covers Santon.

That it was a 4-5-1. We played well in that formation though, Ben Arfa and Gutierrez caused havoc in the first half when they were free to attack, I liked how Taylor ghosted into the box when the ball went wide as well. We don't get enough bodies in the box, Ray Wilkins alluded to it and it's been a problem for 18 months now. When the ball goes wide the opposite winger should come in the far post, the strikers shouldn't stand next to each other and one of the central midfielders should be coming in late.

Sorry I've gone a bit off topic but it's got on my nerves for ages now.

Why is Krul up front and why do we have 3 goalkeepers? I know Pards is weird with team selection but come on..... ;)

So thats what we were playing! I wasn't sure if it was 4-2-3-1 or what. I thought it was but it worked well. Jonas did very well in free role - he isn't as predictable

I liked it and thought it worked well, especially liked how Jonas and Ben Arfa were linking up. I would like to see this when Cabaye, Tiote and Ba come back.

Both Cabaye and Ben Arfa played in a 4-3-3 in France as well so should be used to it.

Aye I liked it a I thought Jonas having a free role was genius. Best also impressed me on the wing. I'd be happy to see it again.

Yeah I was thinking that it would suit Cabaye, Ben Arfa, and most international players as 4-4-2 is only really popular in England.

For the midfield trio, you need a defensive pivot (Tiote), a passer (Cabaye) and an attacker (Jonas?). We could either play Jonas in CM or put him out wide and Guthrie CM.

To be fair he played out wide for West Ham a few times. Problem is he would score fewer goals. If Jonas was to play CM I'd rather Best on the left than Ba.

i think the 433 will work if jonas and ben arfa can score more otherwise there is even more pressure on our centre forward as most of the time he will be isolated, but i thought jonas was very good in the 'free role' today

Depends who we've got in the middle doesn't it? Besides, Demba cutting in onto his favoured right foot...

Best is a good crosser, but to play a 4-3-3 we'd need a more reliable LW option. Santon was essentially a wing-back today.

I think the 3 attackers and 3 CM's would work well.

Cabaye, Guthrie and Raylor all have good vision and are all good passers, plus they are all good defensively. They could all find the 3 attacks with passes, and also nullify an attack.

We can release Jonas, Best and HBA and hopefully unleash havok vs Fulham.

Aye that's true, was almost a 4-3-1-2 at times with Ben Arfa tucking in behind Best/Shola. Best would improve with training and practise on the wing though, certainly has the work rate for it.

    Krul
    Simpson Saylor Coloccini Santon
    Guthrie Tiote Cabaye
    BenArfa Ba Gutierrez

Could possibly work when everyone is fit.

Yeah the way I see it, we have two options, that is the obvious idea the other is slightly less conventional:

    Krul
    Simpson Williamson Colo Santon
    Cabaye Tiote
    Jonas
    Ben Arfa - - - - Ba - - - - Best
