Just been watching highlights of the 2-1 win at St James Park in Sept 08.

Can't help but think the current team is better than the side we had in the Premiership.

Here's a quick comparison, today's team on the left, Newcastle away team on the right, thoughts welcome.

    Mannone > Myhill

    Rosenior > McShane

    Chester > Gardner

    Hobbs < Turner

    Dawson (12) < Dawson (08)

    Stewart > Mendy

    McKenna > Ashbee

    Evans > Marney

    Koren > Halmosi

    McLean > ***an

    Fryatt < King

    What do you all think?

There aren't many players from our Premier League years which I would swap for players in our starting XI now.

I think that Mannone has the potential to be even better than Myhill, and even ignoring potential, i'd say it is a fairly close call anyway. I'd say that Rosenior is better than Ricketts, both of which are the best RBs we have had in a long time. Of course Turner was brilliant, but i'm more than happy with our two CBs at the moment.

I think that Mckenna is a better footballer than the PL Ashbee, of course ignoring sentiment. Evans seems like a brilliant prospect. Stewart and Brady are of course amazing on the wings, though I would like Hunt in there. I prefer Koren to Geovanni, certainly this season he has shown brilliant consistency.

Up front? Can't be bothered to debate that :D

No debate about our strikers, has to be Manucho all the way.... Anyway my team would look something like this from the premier league years and now:

    Myhill

Rosenior - Chester - Turner - Dawson (PL Years)

Ashbee - Evans (Mckenna is the better player IMO, to similar to Ash)

    Stewart - Geovanni - Hunt

    Altidore

Thats from all of the PL years put together. Altidore would bang them in, in this league i have no doubts about that. Fryatt and Mclean have never played in the PL so we can't really compare them. I was close to putting King in but he was just a c**t.

I'd agree with all of the OP's like-for-like comparisons. The thought of Fryatt playing in the Premiership (as in dj's team) would be horrific though.

A reasonable team apart from Altidore who spent more time on his arse than on his feet ,he was a "powder puff" and nowhere near as effective as King.

I agree but my dislike of King puts him down the pecking order, he was far better for us than Altidore but after he destroyed the team spirit and left in January that effectively ruined our season.

***an of 2008 was far better than McLean of now, that was the game Guthrie took a swipe at him and broke his leg (despite ***an walking off) and we were all gutted as he was playing really well

McShane was also fantastic that day (might have been his debut) but Rosie is definately better.

I remember it well, ***an was playing his best football for us at the time and was just running the clock down in the corner and Guthrie virtually assaulted him twice if I remember it caused quite a bit of discussion throughout the league at the time. Guthrie was an out and out Thug that day.

I spent the afternoon trying to get arrested by the best looking WPC I've ever seen...mind I was slaughtered. Top day though. If the Toon had taken a point off us they would have stayed up instead of us.
