I understand why Pud shut the other thread but I think it's still a topic worth discussing. It's a pity the thread was hijacked by the usual patronising arseholes as most of the Soton fans made valid contributions.

What would it take for us to part with Hooper? Would the Board accept £6m or would they hold out for more?

I wouldn't want us to repeat the mistake we made with Miller and sell him on the final day of the window just because it was such a good deal (or so we thought at the time) and leave ourselves short.

i think if a bid of 6 million came in we would sell, i doubt that lawell would turn that kind of cash down for any of our players. not sure southampton would be the right move for him though.

Two things Southampton won't bid £6m. Their second bid was £2m, so they are unlikely to make an arse of themselves coming up with
A bid three times as much.
There is no earthly way Lawell are anyone else with power at Celtic would jeopardise the chance of Celtic winning the title this season after losing the last three.
I think it is foolish even discussing the possibility.

I think if a bid of £6m came in we definately sell him but there is no way Southampton are going to bid £6m so it's academic.

Desmond Lawell and Lennon are all desperate to win the league and also desperate not to be the one blamed for losing it.

    I don't think £6m is high enough.

It's open to everyones opinion what they think he is actually worth, but I don't think we'd need to sell for less than about £8m.

I`d imagine that , apart from the cash being offered, a major stumbling block would be Hoopers reluctance to sign the standard southhampshire contract, with the clause about renouncing his hetrosexuality.

He's the best all rounder forward we've had in a while. He can hold the ball up, tortures defenders with his movement, can beat a man, tracks back when we need to defend, scores a goal every 1.5 games and he looks like he has a bit of improvement left in him too.

I don't think we'd sell for less than about £8m, we have bought far too may duds since Strachan left costing all sorts of money and I'd be very surprised if we decided to sell so low after the laws of averages finally delivered us a decent player.

    This is just rumours but:

On Twitter there is someone called FourthOfficial and has said this:

'Southampton are set to make a much improved offer for Gary Hooper this week, confident of getting a deal done #saintsfc'

Apparently This FourthOfficial guy rarely gets things wrong and does know about an awful lot of transfers before they've even made the news on back page!

    His Twitter account is @Fourth_Official

And also there are rumours going around (606 radio show) that Hooper will hand in a transfer request on Monday. That is not from me, don't shoot the messenger. They are not neccesairily true.

I do not believe for one minute that Gary Hooper will be sold in the January window - this would be a suicide move for Celtic...........but I could be wrong!

He'll not go for anything less than £8million - that means Celtic would be abale to buy Diawara (or Rhodes) and be left with a few million (maybe even a profit!)

If he does go (after handing in a transfer request), then he - in my opinion - shows a real lack of ambition as Celtic (if they win the league) have automatic Champions League Group Stages to look forward to. He'd be best waiting to summer to see whereCeltic and Southampton finish.

I think saying "law of averages" is very harsh on the work of Garry Parker.

Can anyone actually explain just WHY he would even consider joining Soton?

I'm not talking as a Celtic fan, i'm putting myself in Gary's shoes and considering the benefits of leaving Celtic for them, and I don't see any benefits, apart from "Maybe" a better wage and I don't see Hooper as the mercenary type.

I just don't see it happening, it's all well and good us asking what if Soton offered this amount or that amount but the final decision lies with Hooper and I can't see why he would want a move at this time. If he continues to improve and score goals, a bigger team than Soton - one already established in the EPL -will doubtless come calling.

If he waits for a couple of seasons I don't see why Newcastle, Liverpool, Spurs and the like would not be interested.
