Nampalys Mendy and Johan Martial

    Southampton fan in peace.

    Please don't shoot the messenger, but my brother in law is a youth football coach based in Tyneside and he sometimes works with the Newcastle scouting and coaching teams on young player development. I often chat to him about players Newcastle are scouting and he never really knows much about what goes on. However, yesterday he has told me that you guys are looking at two young French players really closely; Nampalys Mendy and Johan Martial from AS Monaco and Stade Brestois 29 respectfully. Both have represented France in the Under 18s, 19s and 20s and are highly rated in their native country. Martial is a centre back and Mendy is a defensive midfielder who has been described as the next Claude Makelele.

    Like I said, if nothing comes of it, don't shoot the messenger. But I have been reliably informed that Newcastle have been looking at these two players very closely.

    We do seem to be looking at French lads, or the French league, more than any other. Thanks for sharing, we shall see.

    Don't think they'll be signings for a while, Graham Carr was apparently looking at Tiote for about 4 years. Unless their contracts are up soon. It's basically following the Arsenal model of taking youngsters with talent and hoping they progress. A lot of clubs will be doing it soon as they won't be able to spend fortunes on players due to FIFA regulations. Hopefully looking at these lads now puts us ahead of the game.

    Won't be rushing into signing Martial

    well according to some random there was a french player along with a newcastle delegate in Malmaison (tenuous rumour at best though)

    Bear in mind he was watching him from 2006ish but he wasn't employed by Newcastle until 2010, when we were in the Championship. Really, we signed him ASAP after Carr arrived...

    I believe it, they seem like the type of player we'd go for. But I also agree they probably won't be January signings, more of a long-term scouting.
