Why aren't we in for him?

****ing QPR are trying to get him.

We really, really need another CB. Pardew get in for him!!

If he wants to leave, I'm pretty sure Blackburn would accept 7/8 mil.

If QPR end up getting him for like 6 million, I'll be so pissed off.

We may well be in for him, you never know. Pardew said he was keeping his lips sealed about who he wanted.

He is probably seen as to old and we don't stand much of a chance against QPR for this one...imagine how much they will pay him!

Well, if we arent in for him. It isnt the end of the world. I have faith in Iron Mike and Colo for the rest of the season. Would be a kick in the teeth to Mike if he were to be dropped straight away too.

Maybe the price tag + wages aren't what we want to pay. Not when they know they can pick up an unknown French guy for 1/2mil and only play then 20k a week.

Because it's worked with Bassong etc I can't see us going for Samba

Whilst I think it would be goods no way would we pay £5m for someone over 26. We won't even sign anyone over the age of 26.

Speaking of Bassong. He's been quoted as saying he'll move for first team football.

We don't need a first choice centre back, we need someone young and upcoming who can cover at the moment because there is no chance Taylor or Coloccini deserves to be dropped next season and Samba won't sit on the bench.

    Very valid argument.

Others mentioning age, how old are we talking?

Samba is a player I admire, but having said that if he is getting on, then perhaps a younger alternative could be found?

EDIT- 26? I'm sure the club are well aware that many CBs don't come into their prime until just after that. 27-33 is the prime for a good CB usually IMO. Obviously truly exceptional ones can go to 35/36

If Bassong wants first team, perhaps we could get him back on loan for the season? Bit harsh on williamson, but we are short in that dept.

He plays for Blackburn, course he wants to move!

Don't think we can compete with the sort of money QPR can throw around these days plus he's got history with Hughes.

    27 I think edit: 28 in March.

At the end of the day Colo and Taylor (ignoring the injury are our first choice). Anyone else will be cover next season.

Paying Samba 50k a week and paying 8m+ for him won't make sense. Williamson and a new cover defender is good enough to keep us safe.

No. Samba would be first choice if he proves himself when he comes, Saylor will have to earn his place back, and Williamson.

    There needs to be competition.

Why should Samba just walk into the side and Willo be forced back to the bench!? If there is going to be competition, then Samba would have to earn his place.

True but I don't think the bank managers upstairs see it that way. They see 11 first team players and cheaper subs/replacements. For every Taylor you have a Williamson, for every Tiote you have a Guthrie, for every Ba you have a Best. It's a cheaper alternative and without having someone on 60k a week sat on the bench.

I'd love another 11 top class prem players fighting for first team spots, never going to happen though.

Where did I say Samba would walk into the side? I said "Samba would be first choice if he proves himself when he comes".

The direct opposite of "walking into the side".

Wouldn't say no but I can understand Pardews thinking with regard to signing a centre back. We have a good balance at the back with Saylor/Colo. One a very physical centre back who attacks the ball, and then a ball playing centre back who marshals the defence. It works very well. We also have two centre backs at their peak in Williamson/Colo (28 and 30 respectively) and one who has just entered his prime years in Saylor.

With all that said you can understand the thinking, and I like that Pardew is always thinking about having balance/structure in the squad personnel. We have natural back up for Saylor in Williamson who I think is a good solid option. We don't have any cover for our ball playing centre back. And we also don't have any young up and coming centre backs outside of young Remi Streete. So then we here of our interest in Tomkins, and you can see we're just trying to get a nice balance.

As I say I like Samba but he is maybe the wrong type of centre back, and certainly won't settle for a bit part role next year.

No thanks. High wages, getting nearer to 30 and paying 7/8m for him? Nah, let Willo have an extended run in the team it will do him good.

Carr gem please. Samba will end up at Arsenal.
