The only way our guys are going to be established premiership quality is to play consistently. To take guys in on loan, especially in midfield (where we have plenty), develop them, then give them back, all the while our guys don't get the game time meaning next season we'll have to spend time developing our would-be first teamers seems a bit daft to me. It's a very difficult conundrum. I don't have the answers. I just think getting midfielders shouldn't be a priority but defence is. Also think DG is doing well. How are Bent/Agbonlahor/Sessignon and all other equivalents (albeit already premiership established) doing in comparison? I think we're doing fine and there's no need to worry too much about things. PS. Definitely the academy needs to be a priority
Your taking shots at DG because he could only score freely at Championship level............What's Maynard doing? He is not the answer. AGain, I'm with JackSwan 100%. Taking in loanee's is not the answer. We all slated Cardiff for doing it, so why are we now asking to do it? If we get PL survival, what will we do once all these players go back? We'll have an empty squad and the one's who stayed will be pissed off because they weren't deemed good enough. So, if our player's aren't good enough now, how will they next year? The answer is to buy. I also think we need to change formation. .............................Vorm............................. Cracker, perhaps Situ has been earmarked to slot in at centre back when Caulker leaves. He is 6ft2" and noted for his robust physique and physical strength. He can also play as a holding midfielder and has impressive leadership qualities. (Wiki). Situ has been training with us for some time now and must be fully indoctrinated in what we do and in what is expected of him. Caulker is 20, Situ 19 and, arguably, Situ has the more impressive International record having captained his team at various levels. My point is that Situ might well prove as good for us as Caulker is at the moment and I would imagine that Ash will be charged with taking him under his wing - no better way to develop an understanding. If he works out perhaps we won't be left high and dry when Caulker leaves. As for Danny Graham, I tend to side with those who say that his service has been crap. I know he's missed a few but name me a striker who hasn't! He's starting to find some good positions (Hansen was purring about his movement from the Orlandi set-up against Villa) and with better, more regular supply. he will get us goals. As good as Borini? Probably not but we can only guess as Borini has never had to tangle with Premier League defenders. But then Danny cost £3.5 million, Borini somewhere in the region of £6/8 million - actually, quite a lot of money for someone who hasn't played a great deal, or proved himself, at the highest level. Don't misunderstand me, I like Borini and would love to have him back. I'm sure he would score goals at this level but we can't be certain until he tries it. We can be sure of one thing, though. Danny Graham has scored eight goals in about half a season and he is getting better and more confident. I'm happy with our £3.5 millions worth. Final point. Danny Graham has got one thing in his favour that right now places him far, far ahead of Borini. Danny SIGNED for us, happy to become a Swan. Borini didn't and wasn't - otherwise he would have despite any "gentleman's agreement" he might have had with others.
Ivor.......What a GREAT post. Something just struck me...... .....Danny has score more goals than Torres. Yep, the guy that cost £50million. Yep, the guy that missed the open goal V Man Utd. So, I think a £3.5million player playing for the first time in the PL who doesn't get the supply he craves, is entitled to a few misses here and there. P.s. Good point about Hansen's comments, forgot about them....That movement was ACE.
Loan or not to loan? Solid arguments presented for both sides of the argument. My take is simple. There is in excess of £45 million at stake for staying up, so if loan players help us to achieve that then I'm for it. That money will help us to establish an Academy so that we can start producing our own young players. For a city that has produced so many talented, in some cases world class players over the years, it is shameful that this has been neglected for so long. So, let's use/do anything we can to remain a PL club then invest the money wisely in the future of our football club.
once we get a better striker then im afraid danny will be dropped to the bench or moved to midfield....watch this space.....Brendan is on the look out for better and he may of found one with this kid from ireland..all this rubbish of no service dont wash one bit as he has had plenty of chances and like dragon says has been to light weight on what to do against better and faster defenders, no service my arse, what a cop out and poor excuse...
Interesting discussion and to a certain degree I can understand some posters concerns over loanees. If you think back over the years we had a couple way back in 2002/3 who have become stalwards for our club, Leon and Tatey found their feet with us on loan and have gone on to flourish. We do know that Caulker is going back to Spurs at the end of the season as would Josh McReachran to Chelsea if he comes but these two are top class youngsters and we've already seen how important young Stephen has been for us. Have a feeling Josh will do the same as he is pure class and would certainly do a job to help us stay in the prem this season. That is what it is all about right now, survival this season and I'm sure Brendan feels we must use every avenue to increase the quality of the squad even if it just in the short term. Of course we also have the services of Gylfi Sigurdsson who I am pretty sure will be another very important player for us, the lad showed some great touches in his brief appearance on Saturday as is the link player we have been missing all season. He scores from set pieces as well which is something we haven't had since Borini's departure. Out of choice it obviously would be ideal to buy in new quality players but we are just not able to compete on transfers with the other teams in this league or even some in the championship so Brendan is doing the best he can to bolster our squad as he knows the other fringe players (including our youngsters) are just not up to the task.
Sorry, Dai, I can't trust myself to reply to that..... At the moment Danny Graham is on target to get 15 goals for the season. If he does reach that target, I'll be delighted and, take my word for it, so will Buck. You'd be better off asking why the likes of Allen, Britton, Gower, Dyer et al have hardly raised a shot at goal between them let alone scored regularly. At least Dyer seems to be getting the message of late and he agreed that there should be more goals coming from midfield.
ivor danny has had no more or no less than any other striker who plays up front on his own. he is no good at this level on his own as the stats says. its so easy to say he has not had the service because he has not scored many but the truth is that he has had plenty of service but could not do much with it....its no wonder brendan is concerned and looking for another striker who is capable at this level on his own.......
Sure hope your right about Situ Ivor .... If you are it would bring new meaning to " Gem in the Rough " . Not against loaned players , just concerned if multi loaned players play massive minutes is all , especially starting half way through the season
that is a minus on loan players, until they play then we wont know if they can play our way but we do know they have the pedigree otherwise they would not be at these big clubs. Perhaps next season we wont have to go for loan players as if we do stay up then we will have to buy quality to take their place when they go back to their parent clubs. but right now we are doing the right thing and not buying high profile players until we know if we can survive and get the £45+ million that will help towards replacements on a permanent basis and just as important to get this academy up and running......
Goals? We should have had 5 against Villa and scored 4 against Barnsley. 3 against Arsenal will be very nice..............
Can any body tell me what the payout in the premiership for finishing 1st to 20th.How much difference in money is paid to every club,ty
Thought id add my 2 pence to some of the points you raised JackSwan in the spirit of sensible discussion Why do we really want Josh McEachran? Why do we want Ryo Miyaichi? - To add a bit of depth to our squad for a fairly low price from a source of quality players!! From all accounts McEachran is quality and could be that creative attacking midfielder that everyone has been crying out for all season.....which in turn will hopefully increase Graham's tally (even though I personally think he is doing brilliantly) If Chelsea is willing to tie him to a 5 year contract I'd guess he is better than what we currently have in Dobbie and Orlandi...especially givn that we are looking to offload both of them - Re Miyachi....il be honest, never heard of him, but if he comes here, does well and it gives Swansea 'a foot in the door' with the transfer decision makers at a team like Arsenal where we could loan more impressive (even buy) players from in the future then i'll be happy to take him for a couple of months. -Should we be taking on these loans...even if it 'costs' our current players....absolutely because if they cant raise their games to take their place back then they are not good enough! Why are they not getting time at their own club - The reason they are not getting the time at their clubs is that these players would be great to play against clubs like Bolton etc but when it comes to their '6 pointers if you would' e.g Man U, Man C, they just are not good enough yet and need the experience. But with us they can get the game time against these top tier teams as if we lose to Man C its not going to matter much as realistically we will be expected to lose to them and many will probably write of those fixtures at the beginning of the season. Arsenal for example can't as it could mean the difference between Champions League and Europa league...which financially is a kick in the nuts! We need experience. - Guessing you mean experienced players etc.......but really do we???? How much experience in the premier league has the majority of our team had before this season and we are not doing too bad at all. Same can be said for Norwich. Out of the 3 teams that came up who has the most 'experience'.....QPR.....the same team that are JUST above the relegation zone! Maynard and going for a player from a Championship club - Potential! That's why. Sinclair was being thrown around League 1 clubs on loan and not scoring....comes to us and we all know what happened there, Horses for Course and that. Maynard may not score loads for Bristol....could be the way they play. We need player who get 'stuck in' - We have never really played that way and saying we really need one, in my opinion, isn't true. Look at the Stoke, Bolton and Newcastle results for proof (granted we were a bit lucky against the Toon, but I cant really remember any 6ft midfielder stepping over the top of us apart from in the Man City game and the likes of Yaya Toure and Barry step over most players!! What if our players get sold -They are all under contract and I can imagine we would just say no throughout January...we have a record of not being bullied to sell our best players. We will wait until the summer where when after we stay up we could get higher prices and have time to replace them I agree we need to get our youngsters out on loan but honestly, apart from one or two, I dont think any of them will be Premier League quality ever until we sort out academy etc etc, can imagine this is part of the reason Rodgers seems to be focussing on bringing in youngsters like Situ and Donnelly...getting them in until we can sufficiently churn out young quality ourselves. Apologies for the length of the post....kind of got carried away
He has scored more than Torres and Carroll together...thats £85 million....he gets one more and its more than Torres, Carroll AND Drogba....£100million +
Cannot understand the DG boo crew. Swansea Legend Bob Latchford scored 12 in his first season if I'm not mistaken and we all would have taken double figures from the lad when he signed. He is well on the way for that. Due to our limited time in the big show, lets look at past top Man Utd strikers and their price per goal ratios in their first season>> computing the transfer fee paid to goals scored in their first season - Chicharito (last years agreed bargain buy of the season) averaged £333,333 per goal scored, this balloons to £1,052,631 per goal scored for Tevez, which in turn is dwarfed by the £2,066,666 and £2,214,285 cost of a goal scored by Ronaldo and Berbatov, respectively Taking into account DG is only have way through the season, his ratio so far (if he remains on his current strike rate) is approx £291,000 per goal. It even makes Chicorito look expensive.
