So me and my girlfriend are off to york tomorrow, staying over and coming back on thursday. Anyone got any recommendations for some good pubs for eats and good beer? All I know is the railway museum.
For fancy French food, Rustique is fantastic. Avoid the Punchbowl (Wetherspoons) as it is a proper spit and sawdust pub.
Is that the one attached to the travelodge? because thats where we are staying. (Yes, I'm that romantic)
In my opinion York is a city that is full of little surprises, and half the fun is gained from looking...
It'll probably be under 12ft of water as it has been every time barring once that I've been to York but that old pub below the river was canny when I was in there. There's a Slug and Lettuce just upstairs now as well. 10 mins walk from the train station and just a couple of minutes from the Minster. They's another slug and lettuce 2 mins away as well, found that by accident on a night out and was rather confused after several sips of ale.
RA's right there.....We're always stumbling accross new pubs in town. Latest one is called 'The House of the Trembling Madness' on Stonegate..... Downstairs is what just looks like an Off Licence, but if you go upstairs theres a cracking bar selling really obscure brews. The Evil Eye is another good bar, that's on Stonegate too. Kuja is another one just a minute away - its owned by Paul Robinson (Blackburn). Pivni is always worth a visit too - could go on and on but ther's too many to mention. Enjoy
If you want a good evening meal take her to the Blue Bicycle restaurant. It used to be a brothel(no kidding) If the Travelodge is the one next to Cliffords tower there quite a few good pubs in the area.
The one underneath the hotel is called The Postern Gate, I didn't go in but it doesn't look too bad. If you're wanting a nice meal on the night though, I can't recommend Rustique enough. Food was absolutely fantastic and pretty good value too. You'd need to book a table in advance though as it gets quite busy on a night.
Oh my. York is a good city. The most pubs per square mile than any other city in the UK! In terms of nice places to eat, there is Ask, Blue Bicycle, Red Chilli (if you like you authentic Cantonese cuisine), Oscars and plenty more. In terms of pubs, there is a brilliant little place called Pivni which is my favourite haunt. Usually quiet, reasonable price for beer and it is a proper drinkers place. There is also Ye old Starre Inn, Red Lion and others. If you want any help give me a PM and I am happy yo sort you out
Cheers for all the shouts lads. Looking into them now. Some decent lookign places to eat, most reasonably priced (rustique looks cracking btw dave her in doors is drooling over the menu right now)
