I watched the game, he goes to the ref and looks like he's saying 2 feet but there is no card waving. Mancini needs to shut up he was waving an imaginary card recently.

I can't see the problem it was a sending off imo, you can't tackle with 2 feet.

Mancini should know all about card-waving actions. He's got them down to a fine art.

he who as not sinned throw the first stone................ just like some posters on not606 who are quite funny in a laugh at way mancini is quite hilarious in this.

after the sending off was mancini waving a card or rubbing his fingers asking how much the ref got paid?

Er, yes, unfortunately there were two (2) arrests for Manchester United for Racist or Indecent chanting. Happily there were none for Liverpool <ok>

I think the reason why many argue that Spearing's ins't a red card challenge is all about the angles involved and where the players are relative to one another.

I've watched the videos of the challenge and I can see both sides of the argument. Yes, Spearing is two footed to get the ball, but when he makes contact with the ball, Dembele is not in his line. Dembele's movement across the front of Spearing brings him into line with Spearing's path, and thus contributes to the collision. While intent is not part of the rules in many cases, Spearing looks to be after a ball not under control, rather than challenging a player with the ball under control.

Its only in replay that this becomes clear, so the ref doesn't get that opportunity to replay the challenge. Decision made in real time, and we just have to get on with it, no matter whether we agree or disagree.

I personally thought it a great challenge for the ball. Similarly with Kompany's challenge. I really dislike the interpretation of the rules that sees players sent off for ball winning challenges like these...

Challenges like Spearing's and Kompany's will always be debated as there is grounds to support both sides of the argument, but in my opinion the players were more at fault than the ref in both incidents by giving the ref a decision to make. Spearing won the ball cleanly without any real challenge from Dembele (in fact Dembele tried jumping out of the way) before leaving the ground, he had no real reason to throw himself in the air after winning the ball raising the second foot and hitting Dembele with the studs, because he did that it looked malicious.

The same can be said about Kompany, he was easily favorite to cleanly win the ball with a standard one footed tackle without Nani even getting a touch on the ball, instead he chose to leave the ground with a scissor challenge that ended with two feet forward and forced the ref to make a decision, if he went for that with a typical one footed challenge he would of definitely won the ball and we wouldn't be having this debate.

ref gets one chence to make his call and his primary responsibility and job is to protect players.

one chance to view both and in both cases the refs saw two feet going in and wether or not contact is made the refs are told thats reckless.

in the end if we say eithe rplayer sent off could have won the ball in each case one fotted then indeed they were reckless.... whether it was technique or waht let them down the ref can only judge form what he sees and so both men had to walk..

Again both fouls were in areas no such foul was needed, no goal was about to be scored which imo was just worse
next time gerrard does it i'll be raging but the next time some guy ploughs into gerrard i'll want him off. thats just club bias to me.

We all know the score now so the players should not do it.

    This <ok>

Whether or not it's a good thing, the modern rules don't give any explicit consideration to intent or winning the ball. It's all about whether or not the player is in control when making the tackle, and if not whether there is a risk of injury. With the Spearing and Kompany tackles there was undoubtedly some risk of injury, what with both players leaving the ground with their studs up (although the risk for Kompany's challenge was minimal hence I'd only have given a yellow).

Imo it was only really luck that Dembele wasn't injured in Spearing's challenge, it could well have been another Ramsey or Holden incident.

    Agreed.

It could have be seen by the ref as unnecessary and reckless. If not that, then intimidatory towards the opposing player. He didn't have to go in with a 2 footed scissors challenge. He could have easily won it with a simple tackle but he chose to show to Nani who is boss in no uncertain terms.

This is a pretty fair assessment of the cases for and against, I'd say<ok>

I have no problem with challenges being intimidatory. Football is a game where you sometimes have to be brave. Goalkeepers having to dive at the feet of strikers in full flow; defenders getting their heads in where it hurts; midfielders putting in those key 50:50s, strikers trying to get that stretched touch to divert the ball...

Nani had the option of trying to win the ball. I was always taught to commit to challenges - those who pull out tended to be the ones hurt. If you want a non-contact sport, try ballet.

What about Rafael's challenge on Lucas back in March? That was purely intimidatory - he made it obvious enough that Lucas had plenty of time to jump out of the way. Was that ok?

well dembele was about 5 mins late to getting there and the ball was cleared before he actually stuck his leg in so one could argue is was nothing like those incidents mentioned above where injuries occured.

again.. refs have one chance to see it and must decide... the rule is clear reckless challenges are those that use excessive force and sliding anywhere whth both feet out = excessiver force so you guys need to change your minds or accept not agreeing with decisions cos the rules aint going to change cos we like a tackle.

again for st john one could argue that nani is better than dembele so he was the one that saw wahat was coming and got out of the way..

at least these refs applied the lwasa equally... again webb... carrick dived in with gerrard for the same ball, gerrard red... rafael goes to stamp two footed on meiereles who is good enough to get out of the way... not even a card...

consistency and player protection is all you can ask for.
