Racism seems to be number 1 issue in Britain at the moment and needs be treated sensitively which is why it saddens me when it becomes a tool in petty club rivalry debates.
Following on from Suarez and Terry incidents, in recent weeks we have had the murder of the student in Manchester; the verdict of the Lawrence trial and Diane Abbots, ahem, ill-advised tweets to stoke the racism fire. My concern is how groups such as the BNP and EDL will seize upon such incidents to stir up race hatred. For example, there are some who don't believe Norris and Dobson to be guilty and were 'stitched up'. This is the kind of ignorance such groups pray upon.
Sport, I will always maintain, is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) tools society has to breaking down barriers. If Terry is guilty, I hope he is given the full punishment both the law and the FA can afford him. However, this is where it becomes more difficult. Any verdict made needs to be definitive and not 'to make a point'. Terry shouldn't be allowed to get away with it (if he is guilty) but equally he can't be allowed to become a martyr to bigots.

I can't see why people are so scandalised by the fact that racist remarks are occasionally made by players and fans at football matches. Rather we should be pleased that there are so few incidents of this kind.

we should be outraged even if one incident occurs

I apologise to all LFC fans in advance but what you say is like saying we should be pleased only 96 died out of the thousands

Race is profitable. Lots of people have a vested interest in race.

Racists use it to feel important, and anti-racists use it to feel important too. It's possible to build an entire career out of being some kind of "race relations expert", and offer nothing more than well rehearsed bullshit.

Your right, but watch how all the brain washed will now start to abuse you far worse than the incident they are on here decrying.

Said last night it was almost a dead cert that at least one person would be arrested. Be interesting to see who he is and what he has to say about the matter.

I'd be surprised if his identity was made public. To me, that would seem somewhat irresponsible.

prob not offical, but it is not difficult for journalists to just wait for him to appear in court, dont get that many offences of this kind. Besides I meant more about what type of bloke he was, where from etc and what he claims he says.

    Fair enough Luvgonzo.
I just hope Chelsea learn from LFC's poor handling and realise we have mixed race fans who do not want to whitewash racism away.

If I were invloved with Liverpool, I'd be inclined to compensate the lad from Oldham as an act of good will - after the case has closed of course so it doesn't look like some kind of bribe.

The kid was clearly traumatized by it.

It's awful timing and what a moron that guy is.

Can't help thinking that Dalglish's attitude over the Suarez incident hasn't helped though.

Though fair play to Liverpool and their fans at the game dealing with this incident a lot better.
