Since it's January and most of us (including me) will be starting the annual New Year detox and diet, what are your best tips for dieting? Also, does anyone know an all-natural weight loss aid such as green tea? Helpful comments only please.
Only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Forget all this nonsense about things like chilli raising your basic metabolic rate and super foods helping weight loss. Their effects are minimal. Cut out as much sugar as possible from your diet. To lose fat (not weight) best thing to do is weights. Cardio is good but weights are better.
Don't look for short cuts such as drinking green tea. They're bullshit put about by the lucrative diet industry and simply don't work. There are only 2 things you need to understand about weight loss: 1. One pound of fat = 3,500 calories. If you want to lose 1 lb/week you need to burn off 500 calories/day more than you consume; 2 lbs/week = 1,000 calories/day etc. 2. Your body weight fluctuates quite wildly on a day to day basis due to water retention. Even if you stick rigidly to a diet, you will often find that you weigh more than you did 2-3 days ago. There are too many factors to be able to control this. However, if you're the sort of person who needs to see that you're making progress on a daily basis, there is a way to mask the effect of water retention and show your fat loss (which is what you're really interested in anyway). If you mark your measured weight in Excel every day, add a second column which shows your average weight over the last 10 days. You'll find that the first column zig-zags up and down but, if you're sticking to the diet, the second column will show consistent, steady weight loss. Finally, have realistic expectations about how quickly you will lose weight. Ignore any diet that promises you will lose 5 or 6 pounds/week. If you look at them carefully, they only promise this in the first week not every week. All they are doing is flushing the water temporarily from your system (see point 2 above) so it's not 5 pounds of fat you're losing. 1 lb/week is pretty easy to lose, but 2 lbs/week is pretty hard work over an extended period. You'll be hungry a lot.
Thanks for the reply, that one pound of fat = 3,500 calories is quite frightening. I shall try the measuring my daily weight on excel.
I agree with much of what Tarq says but I would suggest not weighing yourself every day or even every other day. Just weigh yourself once per week. The other thing to remember is you almost always lose a lot of weight in your first week. Very little of this is fat, it's mostly water. There's an amazing amount of water in food and because you're eating less you're taking on less water. Don't get downheartened if you lose a lot less on your 2nd week. It's just your body sorting itself out.
Weigh yourself at the same time every day. Do it pre and post dump. If you are exercising, weighing yourself is pointless. Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue so while you can look leaner your weight can remain constant. Best thing to do is measure your chest and waist as well as %age body fat and track that.
Disregard the word diet, instead say eating programme. You do not have to ditch any foods just eat less of them, try not to eat in between meals. Walk about fifteen miles a week at least, at route march pace, fifteen minute miles or better, none of this f****ng pansy walking. Get a bike, make your routes progressively more difficult, do not get off the bike going up the f****ng hills. Do not buy any of those dreadful electric bikes.
**** cycling. Walking or running will burn more calories per distance travelled or per hour. Cycling is for people who are to lazy to run, walk or have injuries. For fat burning do weights. Lots of them. If you do enough reps you'll still be burning calories from the exercise days later. Increased muscle mass also means increased calories used just to maintain the additional muscle. Weights all the way.
If you start the weights though you have to keep doing them ... Otherwise you just turn back into a fat **** when you stop .. same as starting at the gym .. just walk or run outside and don't go overboard on the burgers and sweeties
One gauranteed weight loser is to smoke 80 ***s a day. Heroin addiction is also an effective method of weight control.
