A large number of places are talking about Vincent Kompany's challenge on Nani and how it was never a red card. I wonder if this is because it is Kompany?? I hear that "It spoilt the game" - well I watched the game and thought it was a great game to watch so how can it have been "spoilt" - was it spoiled becaus Man Utd won?? Personally I thought he went in 2 footed and, as any player knows, you go in 2 footed uyou risk a red card. Now let's put a different spin on this, imagine if Lee Cattermole or Karl Henry put this challenge in - would the press still be as in support of the player or would it be a witch hunt for them to be banned for more games?? - I think I know what the answer would be. I watched Cattermole win the ball against Luka Modric last season and his foot bounced off the ball and hit the player - looked bad at full speed but the only reason he even touched the player was because of the ball getting caught under his foot - completely accidental and everyone was clamouring for him to be banned.
I don't think it should have been a red, neither do I think Catts was a red either. I can see why Kompany was sent off. Its a shame for the game. But that I think is part of the problem. Some players are more happy to take the foul rather than actually challenging for the ball. By challenging themeselves, this will also help protect them.
Was never a red card, Kompany was in complete control and it wasn't reckless. A very well timed tackle I thought. Studs were down and his feet were quite far apart(could argue it was 1 footed as the other was nowhere near Nani). Rooney is an odious **** mind, clearly had a part to play the way he reacted, should of had a yellow. The red quite clearly changed the game and spoilt the game, for City.
I liked Mancinis post match interview. A cheeky little smile, knowing he can only give a certain opinion and then Man City go on to contest the red card.
I didn't even think it was a foul! What would have been wrong with letting the game carry on and perhaps the ref telling Kompany to be careful! I hear what you are saying regarding Catts, and yes he would most probably have ben sent off. Considering Howard Webb gives penalties against him for being in the box these days.
Actually made me giggle to myself!!!! I have to say I though, at full speed, "He's gone in 2 footed - could be sent off" - never did I think "Should" be sent off - but I definitely thought he made the ref take action as both feet were off the ground - if both feet are off the ground then you are not in control of a challenge and, unfortunately, he got sent off. It was worse than the Wolves red card against Arsenal which the FA refused to overturn by the way as at least the Wolves lad went in 1 footed!!!
The question I would ask is going in two footed a red card? It seems to be widely accept as being a red but the commentator then said two footed challenges are only a red card if excessive force is used. Now this was not my understanding of the rules? My understanding was if you tackled with two feet you were deemed to have committed a reckless offence and it is a red. If the rule is that only excessive force in two footed tackles is a red card then Kompany should have been yellowed. There was no excessive force and he was in full control. If all two footed challenges are red then he should have gone. As a third option you could view a two footed challenge where your feet leave the floor differently again. i.e. there was not excessive force but the tackle was not under control. Depends on the rules which they seem to change and complicate as it suits.
Whatever the outcome and whether you agree or disagree with the red card i will never understand why people tackle 2 footed as it is a completely unnatural thing to do and is dangerous. People know it will get them in trouble so why do it?
