Breaking story is that Warnock has been fired and our old friend Sparky has been touted for the job. If he takes it, what does that say about his 'ambitions'. More local to us at his time however is the question of AJ's transfer. I reckon Hughes and he would broker a deal.
He would improve QPR there is no question, but what a fall from grace it would be. Not too long ago he was being considered for the Chelsea job and now would have to settle for a newly promoted side who don't look like they have that much chance of staying up. I am however so glad Warnock has gone, the guy is repulsive. He's the perfect example of a very good Championship manager but not being able to make that step up to the big time. Billy Davies is another, throw Dave Jones in there too. It does however seem a bit harsh and confusing to get someone in midway through the transfer window when the new manager would need time to assess his squad and decide who he needs to bring in and ship out.
There could be something about this sparky rumor, as a couple of months before leaving us he bought an expensive property in chelsea, and a year at QPR would suit his psyche, but as one rangers fan said re: to his possible appointment ~ coaching ability ? "looks nice in a suit"
Found that comment funny too But would a year at QPR suit QPR? Surely they'd be looking at someone they can depend on to stick with them and build a solid PL side. Sparky is most definitely not dependable.
I think if pressed he would also take the Madrid job, but only if Guardiola hasn't packed his bags by then.
Completely agree about Warnock, I could write an essay on how little time I have for this clown. What really angers me is how much he blames the Carlos Tevez transfer on Sheffield Utd's relegation. But lest we forget his beloved Sheffield Utd lost on the final day to Wigan who survived at their expense. He should not blame others on his own shortcomings, as if they'd one that match then Carlos Tevez would have been irrelevant. Regarding Sparky, I love seeing him unemployed and as much as I'd find it hilarious if he took the QPR job, which is hardly a step up from us for such an 'ambitious' manager, he is annoyingly quite a good manager and I imagine will do quite well there if given money to spend. I guess as Fulham fans we can't lose, either he remains unemployed or gets a job for a team currently lower than us in their first season in the PL, rather than us in our 11th.
Irony at it's finest he is a miserable ****e though! I Hughes has been hyped up a little too much. He did a solid job at Blackburn but has done little since (or before, for that matter) to prove his ability matches his lofty ambition. This is me trying to be objective as possible
He might have done OK at City given time, but you can tell by the standard of players Mancini has gone for over what Hughes went for to give you an idea that Hughes may have been a bit out of his depth. Hughes with all the money in the world bought good but not great players, such as Lescott, Bellamy, De Jong and Barry, in contrast to Silva, Yaya Toure and Aguero as examples of what Mancini signed. Hughes was also manager when Wayne Bridge was put on a £90k a week contract! For us however, Hughes was very good in the 2nd half of last season though due to his departure we can never truly know how far he took us. He steadied the ship post-Hodgson and showed signed of progress. By the end of the season we'd particularly shown a noticeable improvement away from home.
But not before taking us into the bottom 3 over Christmas With regards to his signings, City didn't quite have the status they have now so attracting players was always going to be harder. Having said that, he still spent far too much on players who, in hindsight, weren't worth it.
This is true, but as we've often suggested on these boards a large part of that comes down to the lack of a pre-season following the timing of Hodgson leaving and the fact that some of our players have appeared reluctant to change after feeling settled under Roy as is implied by the media's talk of dressing room scraps this season. In many ways last season was a prime example of why sacking manager's at will is often not the best choice of action.
Didn't he also sign Robinho? Another World Beating transfer coup. I liked Hughes and still do but I feel he is only going to QPR, if he actually does go there, because he will be given a big blank cheque. He is the kind of manager, like Harry, who needs to have a good budget (I always find it odd that people think of Harry as a wheeler dealer when he tends to buy established players rather than unearthing hidden gems, anyway, back to the point). Without that promise we won't see Hughes at QPR and if it's made and then not followed through don't expect to him hang about. We can all then look for the lack of ambition statement in his letter of resignation.
I think it's the prices he manages to get people in for, like Van Der Vaart for £8m, Pienaar and Kranjcar for £2m each. You're right though, he's not exactly Arsene Wenger.
To be honest, I'm a bit bored of talking about Mark Hughes. In fairness to him, the signing of Robinho was rather forced on him by the board - as I recall, he always came across as a bit reluctant but knew that he couldn't turn round and tell the board that he didn't want their marquee signing. I think Hughes is a good manager, and if he takes the QPR job he'll probably do well. It will, as others have said, represent a certain amount of swallowed pride after his comments about leaving us because he wanted to move to a bigger, more ambitious club. Then again, it depends on how much case Tony Ferndandez is prepared to pump into QPR. Hughes, pre-Manchester City, had an excellent record in unearthing cheap unsung future stars, as I argued at length during our interminable search for a manager to replace Roy. I think he didn't do that at City because that wasn't what was required, and he didn't particularly do it with us because he missed his first summer due to the late appointment and then missed his second summer because he slung his hook. I don't have any ill-will towards him, but I can't say I'm particularly well-disposed to him either! Just a bit bored of the whole thing now.
Hughes will have the same problem at QPR as he had at Man City, yes he has a blank chequebook but who is he going to attract? Yes QPR are in London, but so are Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham and ourselves. The only players who go to QPR will be like the Hughes signings at City, mercenaries. I think he would do quite well there but if there were another more attractive job out there he would turn them down without thinking twice, he is a mercenary himself.
I'm with CM on this one. His choice to leave was his at the end of the day. Fernandez will probably give him a few quid to spend to keep them up and then review if they survive.
