You gotta remember, bar a few teams, all our major sports teams have names of animals and other weird ****. Anything that is very stand out Liverpool, animal, certain aspect of the city ( other than mersey)? Like Oklahoma University's college team are known as the sooners as way back in the day the people that founded it beat another tribe or some explorer and therefore got there " sooner". Los Angeles Lakers were originally the Minnesota Lakers due to Minnesota being surrounded by the great lakes.

It could be something as weird as Liverpool Liverbirds <laugh>

Oh and it is Americanize :)

Not strictly true, unless you live in the USA, Canada and I think Australia where the 's' variant is not used.

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Americanise

    http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/americanise

In the UK the 's' variant is an acceptable form of the 'z' spelling (orig. Britain) because, although technically a misspelling, it's more pleasing to the eye and has fallen into more common usage.

Most dictionaries will list the 'z' spelling first, but the 's' is now not a misspelling. Spell checkers in wordprocessors accept 's' spellings, as in:

    realise
    organise
    hospitalise

and so on. I've always been an 's' speller.

    So there.<nahnah>
