just watching the manchester derby in the FA cup

Vincent Kompany's red card was a definite red for me as from what I saw he went in with 2 feet, which is a straight red if my knowledge of the rules are to be correct

admittedly it happened very early but what does anyone agree/disagree?

Not often I agree with Andy Townsend, but if that had been a Sunderland player I'd be totally pissed off - booking, maybe, red, no.

It was a 2 footed tackle so if you are going by the letter of the law then yes it was a red. On the other hand though, I have seen a lot worse. If it happened against us and the opposition player didn't get sent off we'd all be seething IMO.

His feet never left the ground and his studs were down..He didn't make contact with the player at all, and with the slippery conditions should have been taken into consideration...So my answer is no it should not have been a red card...

    This.

Its the type of tackle lesser teams don't normally get away with but the big boys usually do.

I can see why it was given but it just wasn't a foul at all.

Also the ref was doing nowt until Rooney piped up.

We have seen quite a few times before with Cattermole, if you go to ground and your studs are showing, you leave yourself open to a red card. Had Nani not seen it coming and jumped out of the way, he could well of ended up with a broken leg. The ref was spot on in my opinion.

SO Nani didn't even challenge for the ball? He wasn't near Kompany at any moment? So how can that even be a foul?

So Nani was supposed to leave his leg there and get it broken for it to be a foul?
Ben Arfa did that against DeJong and look what happened there, De Jong went in won the ball with one foot and caught his leg with the trailing foot.
Kompany went in with two feet!

This! It was never in a million years a red card. Rooney had him sent off with his usual whinging at the ref. I hate players who influence refs into issuing cards. He should be ashamed of himself, but he won't be.......

Not even a foul for me, Nani was not going to get the ball even if he had left his foot in. That for me is the difference between it being a foul and not being a foul. It was not reckless because Nani could get out of the way and was not going to get the ball.

We had a similar one this morning where the guilty player made contact it was a foul but no card so it seems refs at all levels of football don't really understand the rules.

The rules say two footed tackles are illegal, so they do know the rules.
And you are saying if you can jump out of the way from a tackle no matter how bad, it isn't a foul????

    No.
Maybe if he actually went in to challenge for the ball rather than jumping out the way or waiting for his leg to be snapped.

But thats the problem, the authorities campaign against the 'tackle' is ruining the game.

The lad won the ball for me, they may as well ban tackling altogether.

Even my ten year old saw that.
