haha, i reckon its a good point. heres the sky article about it

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11715/7415938/Bates-Cup-must-be-respected

The FA Cup is supposed to be the biggest competition in England yet big clubs treat it as a chance to get there young players out and field a weakened team because they dont respect it enough. And he rightly said that the FA are far too weak to act on it.

Now saying that anyone who opposes him has no intellect. He has no intellect left. He's a shell of his former **** self; a tired, ugly old man with nothing left to offer Leeds United, football, the world or his family. **** off to hell you scum.

He really doesn't make it easy for us does he? The FA hate us anyway, do we need to wind em up by calling them weak etc... What a prick

Exactly and add Sepp Blatter to that list as well.

Well nobody knew who our 'official' owner was until recently.

The best way to motivate "big" clubs to field a strong team in the FA Cup would be to give a Champions League place to the winner. The winner of the FA Cup has more right to play in a "champions" league than whoever finishes fourth in the top division IMO.

Agree SHZ. I'd like to see a bit of both. Bates' JPT-style minimum of first-teamers in FA Cup teams as well as the added motivation of Europe. It doesn't feel right somehow that even if a lower league side do get to the latter stages, they mainly get there by beating severely weakened top-flight teams.

Only six different teams have won the FA Cup in the last 20 years. In the 20 years previous to that, 12 different teams won it. In the 20 years before that, 15 different teams won it. It's become roughly half as competitive, in other words. Fairly shoddy and something has to be done to restore some opportunity to the teams who aren't multi-millionaires simply because Sky give them loadsamoney.

I like the way he moans abour foreign chairman despite not paying any tax in this country himself. The guy is a total embarrassment. Why doesn't he just f*ck off and spend his final days counting his pennies in Monaco?

seriously, i believe people just dislike him rather than his views. He is right, people dont give a **** about the FA cup and it used to be the most prestigious competition in the country and something needs to be done. If you are disagreeing with that then i feel it is only believe it is only because bates' has said it.

Actually read his views and take them as if he didnt say them and i reckon most people would actually agree with them but obviously that wont happen

Given the disparity between winning the league/qualifying for the CL & winning the FA Cup/qualifying for the Europa League, why do you think clubs & managers who have a realistic chance of CL footy concentrate on the league/CL? Its not rocket science. It does, however, give those clubs below top 6 something really meaningful to aim for.

When we take our rightful place in the PL, we will be able to concentrate on trying to win the FA Cup & league cup, whilst at the same time cementing our place in the PL.

Its not his views i object too its the way he does it - The FA have a chip on there shoulder and cant stand Leeds UTD - Why give them more ammunition to hate us.
He is a has been in the World of Football - No one in there right mind listens to him he's like the old grandad at a a party who has drunk too much and starts chatting about the good old days...

Exactly, I am not saying that the basis of what he is saying is wrong but agree, why give the FA more reason to hate us. Add to that his comments about foreign owners when nobody officially knew who owned us a while back he is just stirring up trouble for leeds utd.

I disagree, i think a lot of his views on the way football should be run are very good and unlike views of others that think they are trying to help when they are not. He has some very good ideas

I'm with Josh on this. Papa Smurf isn't popular at Leeds for a number of reasons, most of which revolve around his lack of financial input to Leeds at a time when we see teams like Leicester splashing the cash yet again. The problem with the FA Cup is that there isn't enough money in it if you are a top 4 CL chasing side & you win the FA Cup. Someone's idea above of the 4th spot in the PL being a CL place, or a qualifying round place giving us potentially a 5th spot in the CL isn't a bad idea. The likely top 3 in the PL will still play weakened sides to rest some of their 1st team for PL & CL matches, but those chasing the 4th spot might choose to pick their strongest side just in case they were to miss out on CL footy.

I disagree with him inferring that only intelligent Leeds fans support him and therefore all those who don't are stupid or unintelligent. It's another personal attack on the people who pay thousands of pounds individually and probably upwards of 20m collectively into the club he runs every season. Why shouldn't I dislike this small time personal attack from this small time chairman?

Cheers Boggers, as you say doesnt seem like a bad idea

I can understand you disliking him and i can understand you getting angry at some of his more attacking views especially the ones on fans however i am talking about his views regarding the way football is run. They seem quite good

Like I said above, I agree with him on that to an extent. I don't automatically hate everything he says, just the vast majority of things. ;)

To a certain generation who grew up on swap shop and grandstand, the FA cup was a magical day. The League was the most important to win with the cup 2nd. The squads were smaller then and so teams played their strongest.
Sky and greed has killed the game. There is no hunger left with players earning the money that they do.
Soon it'll be tag football, tackling is more or less banned. All the rules are killing the atmosphere at grounds. Soon only clapping will be allowed. I may live in the past, but what a past to live in.

    :D

Reminds me of the line from Arrested Development.

Michael (talking to his father in prison): Dad, you're doing time.
George: I'm doing the time... of my life!
