Most Underrated Newcastle Players Ever...

The worst players article gave me this idea, so...

Who do you think is our most underrated players of all time?

Obviously, me being 21 I can't really say players from a long time ago so mine would be from the Sir Bobby area onwards, that is when I started showing a proper interest in football.

Names I can think of at top of my head:

Aaron Hughes - top class pro and player, never in the headlines for right or wrong reasons which makes him for me a very underrated footballer.

Andy O'Brien - did turn a bit **** when Souness took over, but so did many! but, for most of the time he was quite reliable and a partnership with Woodgate was very good imo.

Olivier Bernard - We all know he was class, but was never talked about as one of the Prem's best at the time. Our most consistent player in the 03/04 season imo and was on very little money. Souness runined him...

 

Michael Owen.

 

Leon Best
David Ginola
Laurent Robert
Everyone in our current team until this season.

 

Lol, he did have a good scoring record like. Was just his attitude on the relegation season that pissed most of us off...

Loved him, my Everton supporting mate said he doesn't rate Ben Arfa - said he was another Laurent Robert. I said 'I ****ing hope so!' haha

Current squad:

Guthrie.. Untill recently everyone slated him.
Lovenkrands (No im not joking) .. Shoot me down if you will but he gets given very few chances and has till bagged 3 goals this season. Same as Best, better than Benny.
Ferguson.. We all know he is good but no one else seems to think so.

I cant think of anyone else at the minute.

 

Robert was a legend, I rememeber one game when we were 1-0 down with 5 mins left, and got a corner. He took it and it went for another corner on the other side. There was a collective groan as everyone realised he'd have to go to the other side to take it, using about 2 minutes of the time we had left.







We then scored from the corner...

 

Scott Parker too. Was brilliant when he was here imo, some people seem to have forgotten that.

Paul stephenson.... But im biased as he is my cousin...

 

When he wasnt shouting abuse at his own fans maybe.... My daughter learnt the word '**** off' that day from him.... And all because he was having a ****ter and a few fans were on his back.
Rule number 1 is... Never slagg off your customers.l

 

Guthrie, especially in our promotion season

 

Was that against Sheffield United?

 

By us? Hughes, top pro, solid player and always gave 100%...Not a 'fashionable' player and so was dismissed as average!

By others? Beardo and Rob Lee - The Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes of the first days of the Premier League!

 

Also Shola. I'm not saying he's a great player but some of the hate on here is excessive.

Milner.

 

Hughes is probably the most underrated player over the past 10 years in the Prem. Hangeland got all the credit when they had a partnership at Fulham, but Hughes was just as good.
