Following on from my post about this lad yesterday, he now has 27 goals for the season. I appreciate that these may be lower league ones but anyone who can find the net 27 times by January 6th in competitive football has got something about him imo. My question is not specific to Jordan Rhodes but to the prospect of signing lower league players. Do you think its worth the gamble; or should we target players from foreign leagues with big reputations; or should we target named fringe players at existing EPL clubs? I'm up for giving young, hungry lads a chance to step up personally, as some of our recent excursions to Europe and elsewhere for players, hasn't exactly been successful. Da Silva, Riveros, Cana, Muntari and especially Gyan to name but a few. Sessegnon is an exception but to be fair, he has only looked the part regularly since Mon came along. Cloughie had the knack of unearthing lower league talent and so does Mon. Could it work for us?
Well they have to start some where....and without ever being given the chance, they'll never know....Look at how McClean is progressing. None more-so than Ryan Noble.deserves a chance.....
No one would like to see Ryan get his chance tomorrow more than me kidda and tomorrow would be an excellent opportunity imo. However, maybe he needs 6 months loan at a championship club to develop, in the way Henderson and Colback have done, and that would give him an opening into our first team.
This is why SAFC should have closer links with the monkey hangers....A kind of development clubs, but obviously they get the huge benefits are having players like Noble etc, to help push them forward..... Never under stood why there is no tie-up between the two...
Superkev was ditched by Southampton, went home, played for Hitchin Town I think it was, given a go at Watford, and the rest they say is history, lots of Superkevs out there, But who scouts out these folks?
Very true Bill. Cest, 27 in 27 is phenomenal, and i´m gonna be keeping an eyo on this lad on your say so. I will admit to being aware of him, but not really having seen him (due to League 1 status!). I´m gonna see what I can find about the lad overall.
For me in general yes id always have a punt on a good young home grown player, even with the inflated cost. However in our current circumstances we already have enough potential for me up top(Noble, Ji, Wickham) and need a proven premier league standard striker. Make it so Martin!
I have only recently been alerted to this lad myself mate and have monitored his season for this one only. However,if you look at his stats, he has consistently done it for 2.5 years now and is only 22 (next month). I think this will be something like 67 goals in 101 games. These are competitive games too. There are now 6 or 7 top flight clubs watching him AND 4 or 5 Championship ones and imo, someone is going to get the next young British star for £6m or £7m. I think he qualifies to play for Scotland. Keep a close eye mate but it wont be with Huddersfield very long no matter what Skeletor Clarke says. He doesn't make the money decisions and no League one club chairman/owner is going to turn down £6m or £7m for a 22 year old.
6 or 7 million is a risk at this moment in time. We need someone who we know will score goals and despite his record he'll probably give about the same return as Wickham. In the summer, yes. Not right now
Simple fact of life is though kidda, if we dont someone will. We waited and ****ed about get Adam Johnson and someone else came in and snapped him up. If one of the big boys come calling in August we wouldnt stand a chance. If we bite the bullet though now and take a punt, we might just get lucky. Btw - if you watch him, he is a different kind of player than Connor and is more the poacher and finisher than the powerful centre forward type CW is. I reckon they could complement each other and form a canny partnership? I dont think we will go for him personally as there is understandably a limited budget and other priorities but he is a canny player nonetheless and will be in the EPL next season imo, with someone.
Poor a thought. missed at least 3 more. If your only taking 62% of your chances that's simply not good enough.
Maybe we could offer 4 million and pay his wages next year but loan him back to Huddesfield for that next season, i think all sides would win here. The kid himself would play week in, week out and hopefully at the next level up if they get promoted and we always know we have another striker joining us who will be better prepared.
I remember on the old 606, even then Ipswich fan's were not happy that Roy Keane was letting the lad go. Alot of them were saying he was their best young striker since Bent. I guess he must of fell out with Roy.
I think at the right price he's worth a go. Id imagine a deal with lots of add on for goals and appearances which is win win imo. How about if we signed Rhodes and as part of the deal Ryan Noble went there for rest of season. Win win again
I think football managers used to watch lower league games a lot more than they tend to now, the trend seems to be these days to have a vast scouting network Europe wide Martin O'Neill is an old fashioned manager and I'd imagine he'll have people looking at the lower leagues ( I hope he is as well as taking some matches in himself.0
