I think the nuance is it is a mitigation of what happened, rather than an acceptance that it can happen again.

The entire point (IMO) is that a person with 20-odd years growing up in a country where the term 'negro' is not in, and of itself, offensive, used it in a way that might be considered offensive (if you take Evra's version of events) and in a country which is sensitive about using any skin colour reference.

We all agreed that Suarez should not have used the word, but that a defence of culture could be presented in mitigation. This is the crux of argument over why a 4 match ban, rather than an 8 match ban, would have been just and justifiable. Otherwise, and this is what I am concerned about, an English player can use a racist insult just once, in the full knowledge of how offensive it is, and only get a 4 match ban.

Tell me how this is just?

Perhaps so, but that isn't a protected term under Rule E3(2) so its open season on twats, dickheads and turkey-gobblers everywhere...<ok>

I agree with that, but he shouldn't be using the word at all, and people are trying to say well it is in a different language and all that, when this just isn't the case.

We know why it was he got an 8 game ban, the case was the first racism case that I can remember (since everyone strongly objected racism properly) and they had to make it clear that this is not allowed. Take into consideration the fact that it was probably increased by Suarez constantly denying racism and changing stories and stuff (though I don't know about this sort of stuff too well, correct me if I'm wrong).

Hopefully, the FA will be consistant and give a similar ban to Terry, hasn't Terry also denied he was racist, despite clear video evidence (compared to the Suarez one, where we saw it but Suarez doesn't talk properly so you can't see what he is saying)? If Terry doesn't get at least a 4 game ban then I can see why Liverpool fans can complain about the number of games.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this.
Negro is a Spanish word, used in a Spanish sentence. So it was another language, one which Evra is familiar with. The conversation was initiated by Evra with an insult in Spanish.
He got an 8 game ban for, according to Evra, using the word Negro repeatedly, although originally Evra alleged the word ****** was used. Suarez denied using it repeatedly, and had, according to him replied to Evra's comment "Don't touch me South American", with "Por que, Negro?", which you could take as a response to the unncessary labelling of him with South American.
Here is the rub, IMO. Terry is English and has been immersed in English culture since birth. He knows damned well that using ******, Black, or Negro, followed or preceded by an insult is blatantly racist. If, as I suspect, the FA levy a 4 match ban, how is that fair, compared with Suarez receiving an 8 match ban?

Obviously Suarez won't be using the term again, he'll have learnt his lesson, but I believe that an 8 match ban is not warranted on the strength and reliability of the evidence presented to the panel.

I don't doubt words were exchanged in Spanish ( the FA report confirms it ), I just want to know how Evra knows Spanish. I don't think he has ever played in a Spanish speaking country so maybe he only knows the swear words ?

I suspect Evra is not exceptional in this regard. Its usually in the UK where we assume everyone else will speak English, so our uptake of languages is pretty poor (and English is such a bastardised mix of French, Latin, Celtic and Germanic root languages, its a git to learn and because of the confused rules on how verbs, nouns and adjectives behave, probably makes other languages harder to learn...). However, French, Spanish and Italian have the same common root language (Latin) so if you're fluent in one, learning the other two is pretty easy, or so I'm given to understand...

Or he might be like the millions of other people around the world who learned more than 2 languages in school. Ive never been to Germany in my life but ive a pretty basic grasp of the language, never studied Spanish in school but learned it years after. In fairness Eric thats a pretty stupid comment from you.

Would his two languages not be French and English. All I'm saying is I doubt he is fluent in Spanish - I'm not defending him or condoning him for it just making an observation. My understanding from some of Evras comments were that he was a bit of a bad un when he was young so I just don't think he would have been much of a student of languages.

My basic understanding from my school days is French, basically I mean I know the swear words <ok>

NOTE : stupid comments is what I do, it's kind of my role on the forum <ok>

English and Spanish I'd guess as French is his 'native' language and i was on about 2 languages besides your 'natural' one. I remember many moons ago on the French Exchange thing in school, when we were in France, Spanish was part of the syllabus. Just saying like.No one becomes fluent from school alone but you could hold your own.
