As reported in the Evening Chronicle:

ALAN SMITH reckons that he is still good enough to get into Newcastle United's high flying squad.

The former England international has broken his silence today and pleaded for a chance under Alan Pardew.

Smith has compared himself to Ryan Giggs and feels he can still play for six or seven more seasons.

    ......................................................................................................................................................................

The only way Smithy could emulate Giggs would be if he was b**ing that Imogen Thomas:wink:

Alan Smith is quite an amazing character.

Quite happy to sit in the reserves taking his big-money home every week.

You would have thought that approaching the end of his career, he would want to make sure he's at least playing 1st team football somewhere.
He would fit in well at West Ham United - Fat Sam likes to pay big wages for for over-the-hill footballers - he built his Bolton Wanderers team just like that.

No surprise that they are in as much financial **** as they are. <ok>

Is this smith trying to tell potential buyers that he wants to play for longer, therfore making any possible contracts elsewhere more plausible?

Smith has compared himself to Ryan Giggs?

Just how big is this guy's ego? Ryan Giggs has performed at a top level for a top club for umpteen years. Smith was a squad player at the same club, got injured and has failed to reignite his top flight career. How on Earth does he make that comparison?!

To be honest, even comparing himself to Darren Fletcher would be cheeky!

I really hope some moneybags foreign club falls for this guff coz I'm completely fed up with him now. Felt sorry for him since his injury but his refusal to move on when he's proven himself to be a Championship player is just embarrassing... then to come out with this?

Newcastle would have surely wage shared for this last year to get rid. He's not even getting Carling Cup run outs so hardly a key member of squad. And as someone else said £60,000 a week off our backs could only be a plus.

So in his final year for us he'll have earned, and I use the term loosely, £3,120,000.

    Lucky bastard.

The MLS or of the rich Chineese clubs may pay him a similar salary. Didn't one of them pay Nicky Butt about £100,000 per week when he left?

Apparantly not. It seems, according to Smith, that Pardew has told him he wants him to stay, or at the very least he has not told him he wants to go. Big Alan Pardew fan but for ****s sake Alan, you've balls this right up. Get rid.

Seems that Pardew wants him in a coaching role and not as a player though but Smith wants to keep playing.
