The taboo term 'Negro' in Britain.

I'm ready for the insults because no doubt that's what some fans will obviously try to give me - not that I care!

If during a disagreement at work I called a black worker a 'negro' I would be sacked, without question.
If I called a black person a negro in the street, I would probably get a kicking.
If I called my wife (who's Jamaican) a negro during a row I would be in the dog house for a few days minimum.
If I called my son a negro in an argument my Mrs would not be happy - and probably accuse me of making a racist comment.

So my question is 'Why should Suarez be let off for calling someone a negro in an argument?' - He simply shouldn't, and I believe justice has been done. The minute he admitted using the term he was ****ed. I understand the cultural differences, but that' no excuse. If I move abroad to make a living I would make sure I understand what's acceptable and whats not.

Suarez is without doubt guilty of calling someone a negro in this country, so I don't understand all the bullshit people have been spouting regarding the issue.

Tomorrow at work have a row with a black man and call him a negro and see what happens...

    I don't think Suarez is a racist, I think he's a naive idiot that made a major **** up.

In your line of work Sky this would be the end of you as we know it. <yikes>

Can't say I disagree with what you are saying, already tired down to the bone of the arguments going on. There are no winners.

For some reason Sky this just reminded of the scene where kima and the other black cop ( harvok, havok?) are watching the white thugs talk and using the n word like it was there own.

" They stealing everything from us..." <laugh>

This. It doesn't matter what context it was in, or whether it was meant in an offensive manner. It is not acceptable to call a black man "negro" in a confrontational situation. Hell, it's barely acceptable to call a black man "negro" if you are being friendly. I have black friends I've known for years and still wouldn't try it...

That said, people making out he's a racist are just as wrong as people claiming Suarez did nothing wrong.

What exactly John Terry called Ferdinard and yet to be punished.? Any reference to race or colour is provocative. The person saying it
can look at it as a joke, but the person at the receiving end would not see it that way. There must be mutual respect in all profession.
I will not be happy if John Terry escapes punishment if proved beyond reasonable doubt. Diana Abbott too
must face the consequences of her action if it can be proved. Diana Abbott must practice what she preaches.<ok>

If you are speking english in all of those situation then yes, you'd fully expect those things to happen. But when you were having a conversation in spanish with your wife then no.

If I went up to a black person in spain and said "mi coche es negro" I'd be telling him that my car is black. you have to remember that they were speaking to each other in spanish, not in english.. or at least suarez was... when you look at the quote it's doesn't go

Evra: "get off me you south american"

    Suarez: "whatever ya negro"

He is speaking to him in a different language

But if the person you was talking to spoke back/understood the language you were speaking and knew it wasn't an offensive word in that language then that's where it gets controversial. (Evra understood what Suarez meant/was saying, including the language/context/meaning)

If a white politician had claimed what Diana Abbott was saying then there would be mass outrage towards the politician and would be calls from all corners for him to resign.

You really think anything will happen Terry? The f.a are corrupt scumbag's they are more than happy to let the police handle this and guess what Terry will actually get a fair trial because he is in a proper court where you have to prove thing's before somebody is considered guilty. Suarez would have been better off if the police got involved in his because it would have been laughed out of court.

You make a good point but I think it's the fact that after Evra took acception to the word "Negro" Suarez is said to have continued saying "Negro" to wind Evra up.

But Evra obviously didn't understand what Suarez meant, given that he thought he had been called "******" rather than just "black man".

Anyway, let's not start this all over again!

Would it also be racist to call a white person blanco and deserving of a good kicking?
