Proof Newcastle's success and the Economy's success are intrinsically linked.

The evidence that the two are related is undeniable.

Our most succesful period, arguably, was before the First World War, when the British Empire covered 1/3 of World - the Economy was at its biggest.

In the stagnant, post-war period, Newcastle were stagnant until the recovery of the early 50s.

The Recession of 1979 caused a loss to Sunderland which they still talk about.
When Britain came out of recession, we got Kevin Keegan (and the miners' strike).

When Britain emerged from the early 90s recession, we got promoted and almost won the Premier League, until the dotcom bubble burst and we loitered in midtable, but when growth hit it's peak, and the people at the top were earning obscene amounts (*cough*HugoVianawasemployedbyGoldmanSacks*Cough*), we were in the Champions League.

The 2009 recession hit and we got relegated, but as the recovery happened, we got promoted and are now doing well.

Surely, this is too much to be a coincidence; all I'm gunna say is that I really hope David Cameron knows what he is doing...

Might put a bet on us to get relegated next season... I study economics and lets just say it's not looking too promising!

Ironic isn't it... Newcastle (a predominantly Labour voting city) have a football club who have suffered under Labour's control of the country (based upon what you're saying).

The Tories have always been the ones to pull this country out of Labour's 'legacy' of... borrowing, borrowing, borrowing... "Oh ****".

That's unfair mate. We do better under Tory gov'ts because the youth players paid for by Labour's spending become pros, but by the time Labour are back in power, all the funding cuts from the previous Gov'ts mean all teenagers are fat and mackems.

Also, @Hatem, I also study Econ (hopefully at Uni next year, with Politics. It's all the Tories' fault) and I'm hoping that the recovery stays strong. Have you noticed, we sacked Chris Hughton and the economy shrunk by 0.6%? Coincidence? I think not.

I've got offers from Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Dundee and a slightly different course at Birmingham. Probably Manc as a first choice and Birmingham as reserve. I'm going to adopt FC United of Manchester or Solihull Moors as my local team, because, barring a repeat of the Wall Street Crash, Newcastle won't be playing them, and they're not all dickheads.

Yeah, it's good, my only qualm is the big road down the middle, but I'm sure I'd get used to it. Also, they get more rain than the East.

Are you at uni in the south or something then?

If you look back through our country's history, you will see a pattern emerge. Labour government's have been notorious for borrowing and getting us into a financial mess. The Tories on the other hand have a history of being prudent and usually pulling this country out of the mess left behind by Labour.

Yes, most will argue that the Tories are a bunch of posh Eton educated toffs, but at least they've been taught economics at a first class level and know what they're doing. Unlike...

AS student in Brighton(Quite a few Newcastle fans at my college, found that odd).. but want to go to Uni up North, maybe Durham if I can get the grades which I don't think I will, if not I think Manchester would be my second choice.

I'm afraid you've been sucked in by their rhetoric: the idea of Labour is to spend to increase the wealth of the economy, according to Keynesian principles (I won't go into detail), as more money is going through the system. However, Tories believe this is inflationary and bad, and so don't invest in public services. As a result, Labour must rack up huge bills rebuilding all the derelict schools and hospitals, as they did in 1997.

The mistake the previous Labour Government made was spending on too much too wide. For example, expensive wars and banker-friendly taxes meant we ran deficits in the early 2000s. What should have happened is in those times, the Government should collect more cash from bankers etc. to stop the dangerous growth that created the last recession, and save it for more lean times.

Also, Labour created the NHS, the best health care system in the world.

PS. Ed Balls, the new shadow chancellor, has a degree in PPE, and so is qualified by your standard.

    Rant over.

    Anyway, enough politics for today.

Who's applied for uni this year, who has offers and what courses are you doing?

I've applied for a Bsc in Geography, torn between Northumbria Uni and Nottingham Trent though. Up for an open day on Wednesday.

If you want to do Economics, check out the LSE, I think they have an open day next week or something (they only have one a year, don't miss it!). It's north of Brighton (what isn't?) and is the best for Economics in Britain. They only want AAB, but they do look at your AS Grades (that's why I didn't apply - I had BBB, but was about 5 marks off AAB. Bloody annoying).

@ Son of a Pitch, see above. Econ + Pol at Manchester or Birmingham. Plus, I'd choose Northumbria for course quality, but personally I'd hate to stay that close to home, hence I didn't apply for Newcastle, Durham or any of the other local ones.

The Tories actually introduced the NHS (Well, the idea of it anyway).

Gordon Brown sold half of our gold reserves before the gold boom <doh>

Tony 'The bastard' Blair, was too busy licking American ass that we ended up paying billions for a pointless war.

Blair and Brown weren't real Labour, and the NHS was brought in in 1948, during the Attlee Government. Tory Shadow Minister, professional racist and general dickhead Enoch Powell described the welfare state as 'pathetic'. Never trust a man with a moustache like that...
