    odds question.

does 1/9 mean for every £1 in I will get £9 back plus my £1? (£10) or for every £9 in I will get £1 back plus my £9? (£10)

    i.e I put a £3 bet on 1/9 odds so Ill either win £30 or £4

£2 on Lewis Hamilton for WDC @ 5/1
£4 on Red Bull for WCC @ 17/20
    £2 on Perez beating Kobayashi @ 11/10

That leaves me with £12 to bet on races with.

Odds of 1:9 is the reciprocal of 9:1.

At 9:1, a winning bet is paid 9 times the stake, plus gets the stake back.
    Thus, a winning £1.00 bet at 9:1 returns a total of £10.

1:9 means that if your bet wins, you will be paid 1/9th of your stake, plus get your stake back!
Thus, a winning £1 bet at 1:9 returns a total of just £1.11 to the punter and not £4! To put it another way, to win just £1 at these odds would require a winning bet to have a stake of £9.

    Further to my last…

For simplicity of calculation, take the first number as the number of units you will be paid if your bet is the second number.

2:1 means you will win £2 for every £1 bet.
3:1 means you will win £3 for every £1 bet.
Evens (1:1) means you will win £1 for every £1 bet.
1:2 means you will win £1 for every £2 bet.

    It should now be clear…
1:9 means you will be paid in the ratio of £1 for every £9 you bet. For example, to win £3 you would need to have staked £27 !!

Something I just noticed: Maldonado (750/1) is, according to the odds, three times less likely to win the WDC than Vergne (250/1), a rookie driver driving for a team that one suspects would be stopped from winning the WDC if it even came close. Doesn't say much for the former's ability does it <laugh>

I guess roughly 1 in 750 sporting contests are sorted out by a nod, a wink and a hidden piece of paper.

    Two bets for you.

£2 on Jenson Button to win the WDC at 7/1
£1 on Michael Schumacher to win the WDC at 50/1

Save my last one for later.

I have noticed an inconsistency in the way people are making their bets. This is likely to become more confusing when the season is underway, with odds changing far more often. Can I politely suggest that people get into the habit of making their bets here, by quoting the odds at the time of their bet?

I suggest that members write their bet in the following manner:

    £(
amount) on (name of driver or team) at XXX:X (advertised odds at the time of the bet).

If everyone does the same, this will be far easier for everyone to follow and to be able to see the value of each bet.

I'd echo what cosi says (although allowing bets that have already been made regardless of formatting), and recommend adding that guidance to one of the first few posts.
