Ok hear me out, I know one is a fan favourite at one of Britains top clubs and the other is a Man utd squad player who is widely looked down upon by the fans but I can definitely see some similarities between them. First of all let me say that I do not actually think Gibson is as good, or will be as good as Lampard. However I do not see why Gibson is looked at as being so bad when the player he is most similar to in the premiership is widely viewed as one of its best players. Lets compare them in playing style, both are midfielders whose main strength is their shooting, take that away and they are an average player. Although they can sometimes pick out the killer ball passing is not their strong point. They do not have the metronomic passing qualities that someone like Alonso has. Their defensive attributes are not too impressive either as both are not great tacklers and cannot shut down space in the same way that Michael Carrick can. Lampard's best seasons came from when he was part of a 3 man midfield where 2 of those midfielders provided defensive solidity which allowed him to break forward and score goals. This has a slight risk as it depends on Lampard to make an impression on the match however most of the time he was up to the task as his goal tally showed. When forced in to a deeper role like he played with England at the world cup qualifiers and the WC itself though he seemed to be a completely average player as none of his skills were suited to this role, I would go as far to say that Gareth Barry could have done a better role than him. Gibson has played this deeper role in all his Man utd games that I know about and has looked like exactly what Lampard looked like in that deeper role; an average player. Could it be that Gibson is actually more talented than he seems to be? Who knows. The point of this article was to question why you lot are so harsh on Gibson when Lampard has made a perfectly good career based on the same core player characteristics. I expect a lot of abuse 'clueless gooner' '6 years' etc but it would be nice if someone answered my question.
Assuming this is a serious question, the reason Utd fans are so harsh on Gibson is that, whilst he is a similar style of player to Lampard, he is patently inferior. His passing, shooting, positional play and tackling are all markedly worse than Lampard's. Maybe in time he will improve - Lampard didn't really reach a top class level until he turned 25 - but he hasn't really come on at all in the last two seasons, despite this being the time at which he should be developing fastest. So asking why Utd fans aren't that keen on Gibson is like asking why Arsenal fans boo and hate Eboue, despite him playing in a similar style to Dani Alves who's loved by the Barca fans. It's cos Alves is miles ahead of Eboue.
What a load of bollocks. It's like me not watching an awful lot of the games Fabregas plays in and then providing a detailed analysis. I can't speak for Gibson as I have only seen the goals he's scored on MOTD to be honest, but there is more to Lampards game than the above. Yes I'm bound to be in favour of him, as he is great for Chelsea, but stick Paul Scholes in a deeper role and you'll not get the best out of him...Utd Fans, I am not drawing comparison of these players here, just pointing out where there their positional strengths lie
Eh? Scholes has played a deeper role for much of the last 3 or so years and has adapted his game. Scholes is on another planet to those two anyway. Anyway I dont rate lampard particuarlly highly, I beleive he has been very fortunate to have essien and makelele and such playing alongside him since chelsea became good and has not done pretty much any donkey work and has just been able to get himself in the right places at the right time to score goals. That said, he is a hell of a lot better than gibson who to be quite honest is awful. He is a nothing player. Slow, unfit, scared to tackle, fat but cant even attempt to preasure people on the ball. Is 6ft and cant win a header. Average passing, shooting is tbh vastly overrated. Misses about 50 for everyone he scores.
