I still don't understand why Basso isn't starting, if there's a problem with his kicking, you couldn't tell today. I don't buy Gulasci's injury either, I think he went off with a severe case of embarrassment.
I don't think his injury is that bad, but for some reason Barmby doesn't seem to rate him, he might rate him rather more highly tonight.
They were probably just emotional crutches. Someone on CI has just posted an article suggesting he's being treated for a broken heart.
to be fair, barmby didnt need much persuading to make the change, bassos top was off and he was warming up in seconds
I havent seen much of him for you but he was very good for Bristol and if i remember correctly he was rumoured to be getting called into the Brazil squad. And your other keeper from Liverpool has looked accident prone everytime i have seen him
Basso has been fantastic for us, he's apparently suffering from tendonitis, which means it's painful when he kicks the ball, but you couldn't tell today and I'd start him even if he has to come off with the injury later, he's by far the better keeper. Gulasci had a mare against Leeds, he's not vocal and his decision making is poor, but he's been helped by a decent defence in front of him and we've got away with playing him recently, but he's not good enough. We have a keeper coming in on loan from the Premier League in the next week or two, so that should be job sorted.
Frankly I'd rather have Gordon Banks at his current age than Gul. Sorry, buthe scares the **** out of me every time the ball goes near him.
Fryatt's finishing is poor, it's not going to suddenly improve because someone next to him is big. I'm not actually defending McLean (I think I'd rather we played two wingers tbh) I just think McLean gets everyone's attention for criticism but his weaknesses are the same as Fryatt, both hard workers but lack the skill in front of goal. I completely agree that not enough players have scored goals but the chances are there; both CBs had massive chances today and fluffed them. It's like there is a general fear of shooting across the entire team, not just the strikers. Everyone is missing them.
You know it's possible to disagree and not be a twat about it. Gulacsi is by no means one of my favourites, I end up defending him a lot because like McLean (also not a particular favourite of mine) he is a typical scapegoat when things go wrong. I knew people would blame him immediately after seeing it, but as others have said, there's no way Hobbs can be excused for heading it at the keeper from that distance, it was a backpass that was more dangerous than any of our actual shots. Gulacsi was on the edge of his area, how much further do people want him to come? I think Chazz Rheinhold's analysis of the goal sums it up pretty well. Defenders can't let the ball bounce and you certainly don't shoot at your keeper from that close. I'd agree that we're better off with Basso, mainly because the defence evidently have such little faith in Gulacsi, but I simply can't see whjat more Gulacsi could have done.
There's a bit of a difference between a keeper from a Premier League club who's never played in the Premier League and one who's played over 150 times.
