Is it time to change our system. Teams keep saying best team we have played after beating us. are they really just letting us have the ball and sitting back knowing we dont possess much of a goal threat? I thought against West Ham much as we knocked it about well, Big Sam's team defend the 18 yard line and let you play it around in front of them, others are taking note of that.
4-2-3-1 why does it suit us? It lets Koren play in the middle with little in the way of defensive duty, he can drift into space and shoot from the edge of the box. It allows Evans and Mckenna to use their strengths, fitness and keeping the ball moving sideways feeding Rosenior, Daws/Dudgeon, Stewart and Mclean to attack the flanks. With those two sitting deeper they have more space and time on the ball, which provides cover for the two CB's and allows Rosy to bomb forward. In a way it suits Mclean as it allows him to use his strength, great workrate, to bomb up and down the flank harassing players- with Rosy behind him to provide quality balls in.

4-2-3-1 why isnt it working? Lack of goals. Simple as that. With only playing one up front there isnt enough penetration in the opposition box. Nothing is played behind their back four. Fryatt doesnt like playing up top on his own, he isnt suited to it but performs it well. Mclean is no real goal threat and as a wide man now it is even harder to score goals. The same with Stewart, wide men usually weigh in with a few but on the whole arent 15 goals a season players.
Koren has 7 goals, to double that would be a great total for the season but to pin all our hopes on it happening is not realistic.
Mckenna has not scored and Evans has one goal. They both should have 3 each really but the system means they dont get forward enough.
4-4-2 why isnt NB using it? Nick has identified Koren as our best player and wants him in the right areas to do the most damage but cant or wont trust him to play in the middle and do the defensive duties he needs to do. Why not? Well IMO neither Mckenna or Evans are good enough and strong enough to cover Koren.
So if Koren goes out wide in the 4, though he cuts in it leaves him isolated for long periods. This leaves us with Evans and Mckenna in the middle, neither are comfortable or skillfull enough going forward with the ball. Neither can thread a pass for a forward to run onto.
We arent playing with 2 forwards because we dont have 2!! Fryatt needs a player to play off. Mclean has tried but isnt up to the task. Dele has been a big mistake. Simpson never convinced but may get another chance, though him and Fryatt isnt convincing to me.
4-4-2 why we should use it. Teams are working us out. We need to be adaptable, we arent now. An injury to Koren would mean a change is necessary anyway.
To play it well we need a centre forward. Vokes, Rodrigues, whoever i dont care. I just dont want another 5ft 9' forward. Try Koren in the middle, but then move him out wide if he doesnt do his defensive duties. Or buy Trotter from Millwall who can dominate in there on his own and allow Koren to roam.
This team may well get broken up at the end of the season if we dont get promotion. The future is now. Lets buy the 2 strikers we need to make us more adaptable and provide the goals for promotion.

i think 4-2-3-1 would work with a more mobile, faster forward and with somebody better then mclean wide.
the trouble is when koren gets the ball in acres of space, like he did several times yesterday, nobody helps him take advantage enough.
fryatt isnt quick enough to get in behind, and the 2 wide players dont go through quick enough.
stewart was just as guilty as mclean yesterday in all fairness, but when koren gets the ball, they should be bursting through on the shoulder of the fullback, like elliot used to do (or gerrard did for liverpool friday night for a more recent example) but instead they just tend to stand still and pull out right out to the touchline and force koren to play a sideways pass, which really slows down our attacks.

I wrote this yesterday it pretty much sums up how we played today. Stick someone on koren as Derby did and we are buggered. Mckenna and evans passing today, unless it is square or behind, was woeful. I thought Evans covered so much ground today but a number of times he was too easily knocked off the ball.
Stewart should have been off at half time for Garcia. Why didnt Nick use all 3 subs? To give Cairney 13 mins is pointless for a CM. Mclean was terrible.

One thing I like about your earlier post was the reference to Millwalls Trotter.

Big, strong, young, mobile, fluent passer, chips in with a fair amount of goals. I've long been an advocate of his.

    Simpson + ££££ in a straight swap?

It doesn't look like Millwall are interested in Simpson anymore.

should always use 442, a time n trusted formation with a couple of decent pacey wingers, a big target man with sum one to play off him, the games simple if u let it be;]

Adebola wasn't even on the bench today...he probably won't be here past Jan....there goes our big target man.

Barmby said on the radio that we'll NEVER be a long ball side as long as he's in charge...I think he thinks that if we have a big man up top (like Adebola) we'll revert to hoofing the ball up field..there goes the style of play he likes to see.

So what do we do? IMO pace is the key...none of our strikers have this attribute...I don't think we can afford a striker with pace either, so we're stuck with the loan market...I hope we make good use of it because I get the impression that we'll not spend a lot of money this Jan.
