A little New Year's Eve offering re: the tabloids' need to invent spurious details when reporting the birth of young Cassius Barton; and a little musing on our last New Year's Eve match away at Arsenal. I'll be among the home fans so look forward with the faint hope of having to keep quiet as the Rangers repeat the feat of 1994:

As Warnock has said, 'never let the facts get in the way of a good story'...

Yes, aren't we lucky to live in a country with a "free press" so that idiot hacks can just make up crap so often that much of it is just let go. Who has the energy to challenge so much rubbish?

A 2 minute Wikipedia search provides a wealth of options for the name Cassius, including the original Cassius Clay (anti slavery campaigner) and Cassius, leader of the successful plot to assassinate Julius Caesar ( seen as a tyrant rather than a hero by his contemporaries). Either of which seem more likely for Joey than homage to Ali, who had explicitly rejected his 'slave name'. Or perhaps they just like the name. Still, never let a couple of minutes work get in the way of a story.....nice work England.

I have no interest whatsoever in why Barton would name his child Cassius.....but I knew it would have to be something pretentious!!

Thanks very much. I appreciate the compliment. Enjoy the library and don't trip over any Fortnum and Mason hampers.
