Is it totally random? If so, why don't we get an awesome ties on the last day of the season, just like Anfield 89, or on the first match of the season or whatever? For example, how great would it be to have the NLD on the last day of the season, a match that could decide the top four position, or whatever... Just wondering why this never happens...
Anfield 89 was only so because the original game was delayed following Hillsborough - I think the original game was scheduled to be played some time before the end of the season but fixture pile up created a TV/marketing opportunity to have this as the title decider on a Friday night at prime time. It's not entirely randon, public holidays are generally preferred for derbies because of travel issues for fans, not always the case but I'm sure they try fixing kick off times and dates
It's not random at all. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulfletcher/2009/06/secrets_of_the_fixture_compute.html
I don't understand why they don't fix it so Man C/U/Arsenal/Spurs/Chelsea/Liverpool all play each other at the end of the season. There would be a fair chance that some really dramatic matches could happen? That Liverpool/Arsenal decider, as well as the Man C/Spurs decider for Champs League spot were absolute thrillers.
To be fair though, you do get some good top v bottom thrillers with teams battling for premier league survival aganist those fighting for CL and the title.
They asked Ferguson, HD and he said no. Anyone looking for conspiracies in the fixtures this season might want to note Man City's games after their Champions League group games. They played away from home every time. Yep, all six. That, of course, meant that Man Utd were at Old Trafford for every game following their CL exertions. Pure coincidence, of course.
it's very complicated. two teams in the same city (ie Liverpool + Everton) can't play games at home at the same time for Policing reasons. It's different in London as it's bigger, but similar for different regions. What makes the difference are the teams that are promoted, and those that are relegated. Things are easier this year as Norwich have come up, and they're far, far away from everyone else. It's a pretty difficult thing when you figure in all the cup and european games.
Out of interest why do Man U not play after after tomorrow until Wednesday, while the rest play on Monday? I'm sure there is a good reason, I just can't see one.
