I noticed a post on another thread complaining that Norwich fans were heard singing a racist song aimed at Adebayor on Tuesday evening. Maybe this came across wrongly on tv, I don't know, but the 'chimp' song was only ever sung with 'Gareth Bale' in it. Having been a part of the Barclay singing the 'chimp' song, I can categorically say that its bull**** that the song was sung about Adebayor... it was aimed solely at Bale and Bale only. Ok, it isn't very funny but the song was sung by thousands and was only ever aimed at Bale and had no racial connotations whatsoever. I've never ever heard a racist chant or comment by home or away fans at carrow road in my 23 years of going to games and the minute I did I would report it and I doubt I'm alone in that. I just felt the matter required clearing up.
To paraphrase George II's comment about General Wolfe: "Then I wish some of our City players had bigger ears". Bale 2, Barclay 0 and the chanters got what they deserved. Talent deserves respect, and although not racist, the chant was uncalled for. We should be above this sort of thing IMO.
come off it!! it was a playful dig at a fabulous player. he took it in good spirit and did what he is good at - playing football. nobody took offence in any way whatsoever. i'm not going to go to the football and sit on my hands in peace and quiet - i want an atmosphere, i want to have a dig at the ref, i want to sing songs about the away fans and players, i want banter amongst the players and fans. nobody crossed the line so don't take it so seriously...
I hear what you're saying Supers, and while I agree with your sentiments re singing, chanting and winding up the opposition, maybe at this juncture, with all the Suarez and JT issues going on, I would suggest a 'chimp' chant aimed at ANYONE is asking for trouble! Just my opinion!
and what a fabulous player he is! i certainly applauded him off the pitch and his second goal was a sublime finish. although he got all the plaudits though, i felt parker and modric were even better, totally different gravy to anything we could ever buy
Agreed Dave. Whilst it was your humble opinion that it did not cause offence to anyone Supers, you are wrong. The young chap who sits next to me in the lower Barclay was very pissed off by it. His first reaction was "That's not on - They should stop that right now." Whilst I didn't join in, I do admit I had a chuckle to myself, however, it is naive to think that it would not cause offence. The guy I mentioned must be in his mid twenties, sits in the barclay for a reason - because he, like the rest of us down there want to sing and shout but he was incredibly offended! Just saying!
did he have big ears too? all i'm saying is that gareth bale himself gave the barclay a thumbs up - he didn't care! jesus, when i think of some of the vile songs that get sung at football matches about hillsbrough and the munich disaster, for someone to get offended by a playful ditty really needs to re-evaluate their senses...
It obviously struck a nerve with him but I don't think he was alone in his opinion Supers. Perhaps thats why the singing was contained in the corner of the ground rather than spreading along the barclay!
but it wasn't! i sit in the barclay near the away fans and my area started the chant as far as i'm aware. the jarrold were singing it in places, the snakepit - there must have been two or three thousand singing it!! it was nothing more than a silly song aimed at a player who everyone in the ground knew could hurt us. people seem to take offence at the weirdest things these days... and i only wrote the article to defend our fans from people who thought the song we were singing was racist!!!
I only heard it being sung in the snakepit so I apologise if I got that wrong... however since when did the Jarrold do any singing at any game?
From Henry Winter's match report in Wednesday's Telegraph: "A few Norwich fans cackled at that poor control [by Adebayor] , even breaking off from their unsavoury barracking of Bale. “They’re disrespectful,’’ said Redknapp." One person's "good-humour" is another's "lack of respect" and a third's "offensive behaviour". "Good-humoured banter" to one, "unsavoury barracking" to another. Bad reputations are all too easily acquired and very difficult to get rid of. Whatever one's view of Tuesday night in particular, we'd do well to note the adverse reactions.
so all the unsavoury comments aimed at holt week in, week out should stop then? nobody cares, least of all holt. if anything, its more likely to will him on. so a few people laughed at adebayors poor touch on one occasion... so what? he gets paid god knows how much, made a mistake, and quite fairly got a bit of stick for it - what the hell is the problem with that??? and it wasn't an 'unsavoury' chant towards bale at all, it was nothing more than a little 'light ribbing' so if thats what is now deemed disrespectful its no wonder that football stadia are rapidly descending into morgues where atmosphere is concerned. its absolutely pathetic.
What seems to me pathetic is when "atmosphere" relies on chants about the size of someone's ears or likening them to a chimp. You hear much worse, of course; but that's no defence. Anyway, 'nuff said. Here's to a great game and 3 points tomorrow.
so robbie, would you like to see anybody who chants towards the norwich fans about us bonking our own family members thrown out? personally, i'd say THAT is unsavoury but it doesn't offend me... i don't even have a sister where does this end?! where is the line? i believe there is a line but nobody from norwich came close to crossing it at tuesdays game. hear hear for tomorrow
I agree with Supers - Bale doesn't care - he's heard it at every ground he's been to this season most likely. I have to say, it isn't funny, and it certainly isn't original, but it sure as hell shouldn't be offensive. Re: racism, the idiot sitting in front of me said 'Demba Ba should go back to the jungle' or comments similar to that during the Newcastle game. I would have reported it had his Grandson not told him to shut up immediately afterwards. TBH I don't want to be associated with people like that and was quite pleased when Ba subsequently scored.
Supers, it was me on another thread that suggested the chants were aimed at Adebayor - and of course now I realise what the Snakepit were actually singing I totally put my hands up as my ears clearly had deceived me and I was way off the mark! I was sat level with the 18 yard line at the river end of the Jarrold and I couldn't quite hear all the words and thought it sounded like Adebayor, but thanks for clearing it up for me mate as I obviously got it entirely wrong - my bad For the record I totally agree with Supers that with Bale as the target then it's above the level and fair game, and now I feel a right charlie for even considering that our fans were capable of overstepping the line in such numbers. Sorry again, wish I'd never bloody said anything I'll get me coat, has anyone ordered me a taxi yet?
