Ally McCoist has revealed that he was told of a formal offer from Queens Park Rangers for Nikica Jelavic before the Glasgow derby. Croatia striker Jelavic has been the subject of intense transfer speculation recently and bids for his services were rejected in the summer. With the transfer window set to open again next week, McCoist has said that he would be reluctant to lose a key player. However, the Rangers manager has said that he was told that QPR had followed up initial interest with a firm bid, though he did not disclose the size of the fee and said that he had not had the offer confirmed. "Somebody at the club had mentioned it to me before kick-off, which was all I needed to be frank," he said, following his side's 1-0 defeat to Celtic. "I haven't heard anything else, that's all, and they told me it was just a rumour." Jelavic was a target for Championship side Leicester City in August and English Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion are also believed to have a strong interest. McCoist insisted last week that he did not want to cash in on the striker in order to strengthen other parts of his squad. "What will happen, will happen," he said, when asked if he could hold on to the player. âLetâs be honest about it Nikica is one of our top players and the fact he is our top scorer tells you that. âHe is pivotal to our team and I wouldnât want to lose anyone like that.â Looks like we have made a bid after all for jelavic. I can't see us buying Defoe, Johnson and Jelavic. Has to be a bit of bullsh**e somewhere!!
I haven't mentioned it before but a friend of mine knows someone at Ibrox and he told him a week ago that this is nailed on, this article adds weight to it I suppose
Rangers desperately need the money, but we should be careful not to get into a bidding war that may up the price. Whilst money seems to be no object at the moment, there is no reason to pay well over the odds for the player.
Hopefully by getting a bid in early we can avoid said bidding war. Find it odd that someone told McCoist and yet it's still rumour unless a fan shouted it to him while he was in the dugout. Does anyone know what kind of player he is (must confess that I'm about as likely to watch SPL as I am to go and watch a pub reserve team)?
agree eamon, but their desperate for the cash and were desperate for a decent striker..can see us paying over the odds if we get him.personally i'd give 7mill and not a penny more.
looks decent in there, it seems he got some speed and knows how to finish, looks like a player in the zamora/pavluchenko region. so maybe those targets have not been come of for some reason and we turned our interest in him. good to see he can actually do something with a free kick which comes in handy looking at our set pieces this year.
I'm sure you could put a video together of Rob Hulse's career before he joined us that made him look the mutts nuts. I just hope he's not the only striker we sign.
Leicester offered £6.5 million for him when Sven was there, but Rangers are in financial meltdown and we could get him for less...
All well and good "starring" in the spl Kris Boyd "starred" in that league couldn't hit a barn door in the championship. Don't know what sort of money we're talking about but wouldn't want to spend much on him. If they are in financial difficulties offer them £1,5 to 2 mill.
Putting aside your typically patronising view of Scottish football (one season back in the most over-rated league in the world and you think you're world beaters), Jelavic is a decent striker but he needs good service. Since Naimsith got injured and there's no one there to do the donkey work he's gone off the boil. Provide him with the service and he'll score goals at SPL level but can he do it against EPL defences where QPR are usually the underdogs? Hard to say.
looking at the video the first player he reminds me of is Danny Graham and we know what NW thinks of him! However he looks a bit quicker and can strike a dead ball from a free kick not sure Graham can but must agree with above comments on the defending. Got to be good for 10 goals over 20 games.
