Preview. Both Liverpool and Newcastle United go into this game hoping for the three points to keep up their push at the top of the table. The home side, Liverpool currently sit 6th in the table with 31 points from 18 games. We've enjoyed a decent season so far but both Kenny Dalglish and the fans will see areas in which we can improve. We've got the joint best defensive record in the league (14 goals conceded) so our defence is settled and solid. Liverpool's problem has been at the other end of the pitch. We only have 11 goals at home and 10 goals away from Anfield. If we compare this to Arsenal who are 5th, you can see a massive difference. The North London side have 15 goals at home and 19 goals away from home. With Luis Suarez serving a one-match ban for admitting a misconduct charge, it could be time for Andy Carroll to help solve the goalscoring problems. What better place to start than against your old club... The away side, Newcastle United, have enjoyed an excellent start to the 2011/2012 season. They are 7th in the table with 30 points from 18 games. This leaves them just one place and point below Liverpool so this game is vital for both sides. After a summer in which the Toon Army saw Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan & Joey Barton leave the club for Liverpool, West Ham & Q.P.R respectively, new players were needed in order to keep the club progressing. With the money from these players and the Andy Carroll money, they brought in Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye amongst others. With most fans expecting a solid season and a top 10 finish, the Toon Army were delighted to see their side go on a 11 game unbeaten run at the start of the season and that left the club in and around the top four. A six game winless run followed but Newcastle had injury problems at the back so you can understand why they struggled defensively in this period. They got back to winning ways this weekend with a 2-0 win at Bolton. Demba Ba scored in the win over Bolton to continue his outstanding 2011 for both West Ham and Newcastle. Players like Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini, Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote & Demba Ba are clearly a strong spine to any team and these are players which will be a threat to the Liverpool team. Good thread. I'll imagine we'll go unchanged from Bolton, although Santon may well be fit so he'll come in for Ryan Taylor. Personally, I'd put Benny in ahead of Best, but Pardew seems to like Ba and Best together.
really strange week this with days off and footie on friday and worst of all a match day thread not by chris! Now I feel I can cope with whatever the world throws at me.

Nice thread and some good fair analysis. I see this being a close game and sods law Carroll will score against us.
Liverpool have always been so solid up until recently though. In fact, with Lucas and Suarez out especially, I'd say that this is one of the weakest sides Liverpool has had in a fair few years, whilst this is the strongest side Newcastle has had in a fair few years, so if there's ever a time to get a point or more, it's now. It's probably been at least a decade since the gap between the two sides has been so small, to be honest. Depends on what happens during the game I think.
4-3 to us. 3 ogs by Bellamy, Enrique and Carroll then a Ba screamer set-up by Ben Arfa. 3 ogs by Perch in the last minute...
Hadn't won away on boxing day since the 1980's ,or something stupid like that until Bolton. History means **** all.
