Swansea come into the game in 14th place on 19 points, while Spurs are in 3rd place on 38 points. This will be the 38th time the two teams have met. Swansea City were founded in 1912 as Swansea Town (they changed their name to Swansea City in 1969) and joined the Second Division of the Southern League for the 1913-14 season. After World War One, The Jacks became members of the SL First Division and joined the Football League in season 1920-21 when the Southern League was incorporated to form the Third Division of the Football League. The following season the division was re-named the Third Division South. The first meeting between Spurs and Swansea came in the Second Division in November 1928 at Vetch Field with the home side winning 4-0. The reverse fixture in March 1929 at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw. The clubs met for a further eight seasons in Division Two between seasons 1930-31 and 1938-39 with 10 wins for Spurs, 2 wins for Swansea and 4 matches drawn. During the Second World War, the clubs played two games in the Football League South with a win each. The clubs played for two more seasons in Division Two after WW2 with three wins for Spurs and one for Swansea. Spurs and Swansea have played five games in the Football League Cup, the first of which came in the second round in September 1970 with Tottenham winning 3-0 at the Lane with goals from Steve Perryman, Martin Peters and Roger Morgan. Eight years later, Swansea drew with Spurs 2-2 at Vetch Field in the second round first leg and won 3-1 at White Hart Lane. The most recent League Cup meetings came in the second round in 1991 with Swansea winning 1-0 at home in the first leg and Spurs winning 5-1 at White Hart Lane with goals from Paul Stewart, Vinnie Samways, Gary Lineker, Paul Allen and an own goal. Swansea City won promotion to the Top Flight of English Football for the first time in season 1981-82 and were league leaders at one stage before finishing in 6th position. The match at Vetch Field in September 1981 resulted in a 2-1 win for The Swans with Glenn Hoddle scoring for Spurs, while the return match at the Lane in May 1982 was won 2-1 by Spurs with Gary Brooke scoring both goals. A similar set of results came in Swansea's second season in Division One with a 2-0 home win in Swansea and a 1-0 home win in Tottenham. The most recent game played between the two clubs came in a friendly played in Swansea in November 1992, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City have never met in the FA Cup. Swansea became the first Welsh club to play in the Premier League by winning the play-off against Reading at Wembley 4-2 thanks mainly to a Scott Sinclair hat-trick. During the summer, Tottenham Hotspur's England U-21 central defender Steven Caulker joined Swansea City on a season's loan where he joined former Spurs players Wayne Routledge and Mark Gower. Overall, Spurs have won 20, Swansea have won 10 and 7 of the 37 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Swansea City Matches 1928-2011 They Played for Spurs & Swansea.... Nice work THFC6061, it's surprising that we have met Swansea 5 times in the League Cup considering it's relatively short history yet never in the FA Cup.
Another exciting game beckons, without wishing to be disrespectful to Swansea I don't think they've got enough to trouble us.
As I said in the Norwich thread, we really shouldn't be trying to pass it into the net like we seem to do whenever we play the teams we're expected to beat comfortably - Vorm is a quality keeper, yet in the past we've made the likes of Boaz Myhill look like Lev Yashin. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal to make our jobs easier.
Well said. I think Ade confirmed last night (not that any further confirmation was really necessary!) that he just isn't a 'natural goalscorer'. Having said that, however, his overall contribution to the team is invaluable: The footwork pulled off to set up Bale was sheer class. I sat there watching it, wondering to myself what would've happened if- last year- Crouchy had attempted something like that, and came to the swift conclusion that it would be rather like watching a drunk 'Cheese-String' trying to pole-dance. The stats speak for themselves this season: - Only 3 teams have scored more than us at home (The Mancs both have 28, Chavs have 22) - Similarly, only 3 teams have scored more away (City have 25, with Manure and Le Scum both on 19) - Bearing in mind the fact that we have a game in hand, that ain't bad at all! - This time last year: Played 19, Scored 29 - And now: Played 17, Scored 34 Nothing to talk about, really.
Did worry me a bit when more of our shots on goal were more likely to injure someone behind the goal than actually go near it!(Kyle Walker I'm talking to you!)
Ade may not be the natural goalscorer we need, but he's the striker who can hold up the ball we also need - we need an upgrade for Defoe for the second half of the season, and then the team is complete...until we need a striker who can hold up the ball, as Ade will be headed back to Citeh.
we was unlucky at home to utd, deserved a draw i think, but we're not playing well at the moment and are down to the bare bones at the back, i can't see us getting anything from you, but it's a funny ol game as they say. 1-3
Ade has been brilliant for us, our most irreplacable player, and the one we need to buy cover for. Looking forward to another cracking game, and thanks for another top class match thread 6061
Ron Burgess looks abit like Matt Busby....great job being a milkman in those days! Anyway whats this about Ade not being a natural goal scorer, he's had two disallowed, Terry clears one off the line, others off the line in other matches. Better luck there and he'd be on the same as 'flash in the pan' Ba. Ba who by his own admittance in a paper 2 days ago, "i've never been in form like this", against Ade who already has a consistantly good PL goals/games ratio, with more than one club, check it. Whoever is suggesting Ade is not a goalscorer could they tell me why?...I really hope some missed chances is not the answer.
More top-notch stuff, 6061. The Swansea fan's match-thread is almost as good this week, just to keep you on your toes! Their depleted defence may help us out in this game, as they've been very hard to break down at home, as Lidls pointed out. Should be a good game for the neutral, as people are coming to expect from both sides, I think. Probably a good sign for the future of both clubs.
Caulker can't play who has been involved in their early season clean sheets, they started leaking goals when he got injured, first game back, clean sheet.
Talking of Cauker here's what he thinks of the game: On-loan defender Steven Caulker wants Swansea to stop Tottenham’s title drive on Saturday. The Spurs centre-back (above), who turns 20 today, is ineligible to play for the Swans against his parent club. Since he returned from a knee injury earlier this month, Brendan Rodgers’ side have conceded only two goals in four games. And the England Under-21 international, who admits split loyalties, insists the Welsh club can still beat Harry Redknapp’s red-hot side without him. “My aim is to keep Swansea in the Premier League but obviously I have been at Spurs for the last four or five years, so it’s a difficult one,” Caulker said. “But I’m hoping for three points for Swansea. Spurs are a fantastic team with great depth in their squad and there is no reason why they can’t go on and push for the title. “It’s a tough one for me because, if they do go on and win the title, I’m sure they will be looking to bring in new players. “It’s a catch-22 but I wish the boys all the best and hope they do as well as possible.” http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/new...-Swansea-to-beat-Tottenham-article846869.html
"But I’m hoping for three points for Swansea." U remember a certain JO'H saying a similar thing while on loan - a lot of people slated him for it. I wonder if the same faces will come forward and criticise Caulker?
Didn't O'Hara say that he wanted Portsmouth to knock Spurs out of the FA Cup while he was being paid to be a pundit? A little different from Caulker's statement, for me.
