Sir Alex has challenged Carrick to "start a period of dominating the centre of midfield" and use the retirement of Scholes as an "opportunity to be the main man in midfield".
Obviously Carrick does not have the long range passing ability of Scholes, but Ive always thought he can run with the ball.(His goal at QPR reminds me of something he did with Spurs vs Arsenal but he hit the post?)
My only concerns with him is that he tends to be too negative and he needs to add more goals to his game.
As the article says, the midfield combo of Jones and Carrick has developed by default,so assuming the midfield injuries are still a way off and SAF does not buy a midfield general, it seems a bit of a last resort. Not saying it's a bad thing cause he might pull it off.For the sake of the league, I hope he does!!

I think Carrick is under rated, but he's still not talented or powerful enough to "run" the midfield. That said I'd rather have him in the line up than not at the moment.

He has been instrumental in our run of clean sheets, which funnily enough started when he returned from injury. The only goal we have conceded since is the dodgy penalty against Newcastle, he is obviously rubbish.

Carrick has had a decent run of form!! That's it, so did wes brown once. Carrick is not even good enough for any of the top three teams

He has fallen away in the last few seasons but considering our injuries crisis, he has to start.

Not many of your players would get into other teams, but together they make one of the best.

If Barry can get into Man City's team I don't think Carrick would fin it to difficult.

michael carrick is severely underrated and has the ability to make others play better around him. He's put in some cracking performances this season, and has shown you do not have to make loads of tackles to win possession. He just needs someone more energetic beside him to work with

It says something when he is rated so highly on the continent but critisised here.

Well perhaps the last few weeks when he has played as more of the "English" midfielder, box to box, apparently high tempo, he might get appreciated. <ok>

I've been saying this for a while. He gets slated because his name is Carrick and not Anderson. Certain players are never going to be liked it seems, no matter how well they play.

He's also highly rated by other players as well.

Phil jones - "He's terrific; I don't think everybody realizes what he does for the team," said Jones last week. "He's massively underrated. Other people may not notice what he does, but when you're playing alongside him, you can't help but be impressed. He seems to have this sixth sense -- he knows where to be, where the ball's going to be, he's always in the right place at the right time to either receive the ball or break up an attack."

Xabi alonso - "I’ve missed a player like Michael Carrick in the England midfield, somebody who knows how to be in the right place at the right time. Gerrard gains a lot from having a player like Carrick as a partner, somebody who provides the back-up he needs to be free to bring his power to bear decisively in a game. Players who can run all day long, who invest a huge physical effort, who attack and defend box to box. But the way I understand it, you also need someone who delivers simple short passes, even if they seem innocuous at the time."

Xavi - The European Championship winner told journalists today that, "Carrick gives United balance and can play defensively too. He passes well, has a good shot and is a complete player. United have a very good midfield at a high level and they're strong physically and technically."

He must be doing something right <laugh>

Interesting you mention Xavi there - he's a player who can pass it sideways 100 times in a match and everyone will say he's world class. Carrick does the same and everyone says he's ****! Obviously Xavi's a class above Carrick, but it does show how blinkered some people can be.

Then again, i hate the football that barca play 85% of the time. The other 15% is magical though. He has always been rated highly in other countries for his technical ability, but in england we like the players that run around a lot. It's also why gareth barry is severely underrated by everyone.
