True, but a blind man could also see it was a penalty when Hernandez was tripped earlier. Tbh if I were a Wigan fan I'd be more pissed off about the red card. Dempsey did a very similar flailing arm challenge last week and didn't even get a free kick against him, how can it not even be a foul one week and a red card the next? Very poor refereeing imo - it was always going to be a tough match for Wigan after Park's goal, but that just ended it as a contest.
Dempsey's was worse IMO. Red card was extremely harsh, but I tried to rematch it from a refs point of view, and it sort of looks like Carrick gets a face full of hand and Whathisface is intentionally pushing Carrick away with his hand in his face. Seeing as we all watch football at least a good amount, its obvious Whatshisface is just trying to win a 50-50 battle, and at worse given a free kick.
If I were the ref I'd have been tempted to give a yellow card - Sammon has thrown his arm out without looking which is pretty reckless when he knew Carrick was pressuring him. But I don't think he meant to catch him in the face at all, and with no intent or significant chance of injury you can't give a red.
