Genuinely no idea why they'd threaten to kick you out. Certainly not performing to his duties so an email about him would do nicely.

I was told to calm down.....all I did was call him over and mention that every week there is smoking in the loos - apparently I was too vocal!

I was calm and called him over and said that there was smoking in the loos and that it happens every week. I did also ask why no one ever does anything about it - I was that calm and collected. Apparently that is too vocal. My suggestion is that if a 42 year old calm sober bloke asks a question in a non-threatening manner, perhaps you are in the wrong job if you get aggressive back........

Is it the stewards attitude that annoyed you or the smoking in the toilets? I dont smoke but how long do you spend in the loo anyway?
In the stewards defence I have seen quite a few people being ejected from SMS for smoking over the last year or so.

Yep he did, but I was told it was not important as they were busy - this was in 1st half injury time , and there were only drinkers (and smokers!) on the concourse. I know it seems trivial to smokers, but it brings out the Victor Meldrew in me when I get told to calm down when no one seems to want to do anything about people smoking in a non-smoking venue. Sorry if that offends the smokers, but it's a fact - St Mary's is a non-smoking venue. I can't take my drink upstairs or drink during the game - I accept that, why can't smokers accept that you cannot have a *** in the stadium?

Yes his attitude annoyed me. To him it wasn't important. I am only in the loo for as long as it takes to wee, but that is surely irreverent? why should I feel guilt about complaining about walking into a fog of smoke in a non-smoking venue?

A fog of smoke? Really? The steward sounds a bit of a tit but to be fair it probably isnt the biggest worry he has.

Agreed, but why is my complaint any worse than someone elses? To you smoking is not a big deal, but to others it may be.

You need to get a grip sunshine. Non-smokers don't want to be inhaling smoke and having to put up with it's smell etc. Plus it's against the law and ought to be dealt with in a far more appropriate manner

I am a smoker, I enjoy smoking however:

Would it be important if said venue was reprimanded and eventually handed a final warning with possible closure due to continued breach of the law????

After all if it is continually ignored, then multiple complaints are sent to authorities (I guarantee you some will do that after all this forum is but a small section of Saints following.)

Sooo it really is important. You can't stop it completely as there are always those with a sense of self importance however you can tackle it hands on.

If you smoke in a pub and the pub is allowing it that pub gets fined. I know someone who owns several nightclubs and the 'security staff' regularly eject people who are breaking the law in their venues. Whether that be violence, behaviour or any other law breaking.

Stupid comment and I am sure Nicola Cortese would agree!!! after all Nigel and he always talk about 'Saints staff all part of the team from the cleaner right up to the chairman' . I assume the Stewards are included and if they aren't doing anything other than watching the game and telling people to sit down then they are not pulling their weight as part of the team.

Perhaps the Club should designate areas as a Smoking zone, but how big would it need to be and it should be properly ventilated. I am a non smoker myself, but recognise that people have a right to smoke if they need to. Using toilet cubicles is unfair on people with other needs!

I'm a non-smoker and if i went in a toilet and it was full of smoke i'd be a bit miffed but i don't think it would upset me to the extent that i'd have to tell a steward, afterall i'm only in there for 30 seconds, each to their own though.

Talking of smoking i remember when we were in the premier league and i was in the chapel and some bloke was smoking a joint 2 rows in front of me! no joke! nothing was said though!

How about smoke detectors linked to a sprinkler system?;)
Maybe the steward in question was just having a bad day at the office? I think a letter to the club reminding them of their duty to enforce the law might well concentrate their minds, particularly if you mark it cc. SCC.

thereisonlyoneno7 - some stewards are bullies they pick on the weak and go with the flow, some of them get a real kick out of their authority and trying to intimidate and threaten people. I think this is a growing trend which I really dislike.

Hate to say it but we have the worst stewards I have ever know. All of them have ideas above there station think they are god. I wouldnt mind but most of them dont do a good job and I have seen it countless times in the Kingsland letting there mates in for free via the fire exit doors. Happy to wear there orange coat and throw there massive ego around looking for a fight....just like nightclub bouncers.....or are they one and the same ???

I'm a smoker, in the process of trying to give up (although very difficult when it's Christmas as drinking a lot), and I can manage 2 hours without one at the ground, but I think they should do what some other clubs do and make a little barrier outside the ground and open one of the exits as a smoking area, other clubs do this and see no logical reason not to as it is a win-win. <ok>

I'm a smoker and these are my veiws

1: the stewards @ our club & any other club up and down the land are a bunch of jobsworths, who think they are above everybody

2: i don't see why the reaction is so bad from everybody on this thread, it happens right through all the leagues at every ground up and down the country, it has happened since the law was introduced, and will continue todo so, in the northam it's rather common for people to be smoking the old spliffs in the stands, seen that done many of times.

and before anyone thinks i smoke in the ground, i don't i can wait a few hours before having a ***
