BEEN IN AMSTERDAM 12 YEARS NOW ITS AMAZING HOW MANY SUPPORTERS THERE ARE, not just the ones who come for a quick bash from the ferry but genuine Dutch who have a real affinity for the lads even before we met
ROG met Scotty NL, during the pre season, was with his lovely wife, we had a great day and a great session in Bielefeld, hope its on next years list, you should pm him, a crackin family.
I do a fair amount of Comedy in and around Yorkshire and one of the guys I go on tour with and have become good friends with is a mackem. We sort of take on the rest of Yorkshire together in a North Eastern solidarity as most people here are Mancs/Leeds (shudder) or some London club. I get abused for supporting the toon as does my mate for supporting Sunderland BUT we know and love our clubs. They don't so their opinion counts for nowt!
As a lot of you know from my profile my support came from family who live in Durham. Over here, like alot of areas throughout Ireland they tend to support the succesfull clubs like Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal or the obvious old firm teams and are by the majority plastics. The question I get asked the most is "why Sunderland" something which boils my piss as I usually reply with "Why Liverpool/Man Utd?" "Do you come from their?" "Sorry you probably have family over their?" "Have you been over to watch them?". I wouldn't have a go at anyone who for financial reasons or maybe other mobility issues can't always (at least once) get over to see the team they claim to support. I remember once meeting an especially lovely fellow who asked me the usual question "why Sunderland" followed by "you shouldn't support English Teams". He was obviously trying to show off his nationalist qualities but when I asked him who he supported and whether he was a GAA fan/player I was astounded by the reply which was "I support Celtic but don't watch or play GAA!" maybe I shouldn't of laughed in his face but how ironic.
Like you I live in York and have done for the past 3 years. I take no **** from this lot down here, famed for making chocolate full-stop and the laziest, most useless ****ers Iv'e ever met. Yeah, they seem to support anyone down here except their local team but to an area so easily influenced by anything or anyone, I might do a support Stranraer campaign next year All the best for 2012 & to the comedy routine
I wish I'd seen this thread the first time round, it's so true! I get he 'Oh really? That's interesting' feigned care. I'm fed up of patiently explaining that I was born in Sunderland and moved to Jersey at a young age, even without going into even though my family are from Shields we support Sunderland... Then trying to explain where Shields is...
If I'm abroad, the reaction I tend to get is an enthusiastic recital of the 2002 David O'Leary team. In England, it tends to be one of slight disdain but begrudging respect.
My belief is you should support your home team, however good/however bad. the pride is in your heart. always carry your town on your sleeve, and **** anybody who dislikes. wear your shirt with pride. Nice one Leeds. Michael Bridges career was effectively ended in europe playing for leeds, I liked the lad, shame, damn shame.
If Bridges had stayed fit and partnered Viduka instead of us resorting to buying Fowler/Keane, we'd probably never have finished outside 3rd and missed out on the CL money that our survival depended on. We'd also have seen more goals like this beauty: please log in to view this image And not sold about 80 players to Newcastle after the **** hit the fan.
This is how it normally goes in the USA Yanks asks which soccer team do you support I reply Sunderland Yank says is that near London. (Stupid twats think the whole of England is in London) I drink in a Irish bar close to my house & the bartender is from Dublin he is a big Sunderland fan between the two of us we have filled the bar with Sunderland Flags, Pictures, Signed balls & a few shirts. So more people in the bar now know who we are and where on the map we are
Ha chocolate rules the roost here. Even the stadium was names after KitKats for a short while! Thank you for your wishes, I extend them to yourself too
That is a class reply, but have you realised this thread was started about a year ago, and it is still a valid thread now, shove it down their throats 1978, with my and every SUNDERLAND supporters blessing. and have a great new year.
I get a good reaction in Marbs. There´s a lot of Mags, funnily enough, but the banters decent. The majority are West Ham lads, and they are good craic, we have a lot in common, ie glorious history and epic failures! Nobody supports Malaga, which is odd, unless they are playing Sevilla, everybody is Madrid or Barca.
