So do we, and so do plenty of midtable Premier League clubs, you're deluding yourself if you think that's some kind of special status afforded to Celtic.

I am not talking about the odd one scattered about. Anywhere that Irish people have settled (which is pretty much everywhere) you will find a Celtic SC.

The Celtic worldwide fan base dwarfes all but the very top of the EPL.

So you're now saying that fanbase decides 'bigness' of club, therefore we're clearly bigger than Villa. Accept it and move on <ok>

Disclaimer: I don't actually think this. This thread is bullshit, as per:

I think its stupid to compare Scottish teams to English teams chalk and cheese, no doubt Celtic has a great history, however they and the Scottish league has declined greatly. At the moment Newcastle are a "bigger club" if you had to compare them, we could attract better players and the club would fetch more money, and we do have a global reputation, we are currently living off the reputation off the Dagleish and Keegan years!

I meant Dalglish, foreign players will have grown up watching the Premier League, when we were classed as the entertainers, add this to the first class stadium and good training facilities. We can still attract quality international players, such as Ben Arfa and Santon.

Celtic are comfortably 'bigger' than Newcastle, to be honest, I think Celtic (and Rangers) are definitely comparable to Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal in terms of stature.

The reason top players would choose Newcastle over Celtic is because the EPL is the strongest (read richest) league in the world whilst the SPL cannot compete (not a criticism).

    As has already been said, to a fan their club will always be the best but in terms of stature I'd say English football is roughly split up as follows;

    Top Tier
    Man Utd
    Liverpool
    Arsenal

    New Elite
    Chelsea
    Man City

    Big Clubs
    Tottenham
    Everton
    Newcastle
    Aston Villa
    Leeds
    Sunderland
    Notts Forrest

Rightfully, fans of clubs can argue that based on recent successes their club's stature may fluctuate (eg. Chelsea and Man City are now 'huge clubs' or if Southampton splash the cash in the prem, they will become a 'huge club') but historically this is roughly how I see it. The Sheffield clubs may sneak into there if they return to the top flight.

Fair play to you mate. I was only on the wind up regarding Villla but a Newcastle fan brought Celtic up. I would say Villa and Newcastle would be around the same.

  12. Wouldn't entertain the piss-pot Merson Tash. He played for Boro and thinks he knows how to wind the North East fans up. Wasn't so cocky in the 'Dickens Inn' a few years back though when I met him..

We are now a bigger club than Liverpool because we won and they didn't.

Could someone tell me what was said between Jeff and Merson? Curious because I like people defending Newcastle and I think Jeff is a hero.

    Agree with this <ok>

I didn't see Soccer Saturday and no-one else has asked the question, but why was Demba Ba to Aston Villa even being discussed in the first place?

    This is sooooo frustrating...

Man Utd are bigger than us.
    Arsenal are bigger than us.
    Liverpool are bigger than us.

And after that its between us, Tottenham, Chelsea, Villa and Everton.

We pull in 50000 people week in week out to watch us. We are a one club city. We pretty much invented the replica shirt. We've been consistent members of the top flight and have consistently competed at the top end of the English 1st Division.

We are a sleeping giant in my opinion.
