Yep Merry Xmas to all The reason Sky went on about the Big 4 is because they have easily been the dominant teams in the 'Sky era'. Morevover three of the Big 4 have an unquestioned pedigree going back over a century or more. Chelsea were bigger than some people make out, but clearly they never had the status of the 'Big 3' till very recently. City have become the 'new Chelsea' so the Big 4 has to be expanded, we have a steady not spectacular record in the Sky era, but our recent exploits plus our our long glorious history mean we deserve to be in the 'Sky Six' IMHO. Villa have won more trophies than us, but their glory days are long gone. Most of their trophies were won before World War One, Villa fans will still doubtless claim they are bigger than Spurs, but they have faded as a major force in English football, indeed the Midlands in general really are a lacklustre bunch of clubs currently. Because of the their 9 titles to our 2, Everton fans almost always see themselves as bigger than Spurs, but again they have faded as a major force. One could maybe talk of the 'Super 8' but I think the term 'Sky Six' might stick. Certainly, the 'Big 4' is now outmoded.
The Champions League I guess. They haven't won the league for 20+ years although their record in cups is 3 of each in that period and 1 Champions League. They are still a good brand, but their recent shennanigans could damage even that.
You're either having a laugh LDL or you haven't got a clue about football history. Pool have waayyyyyyyyyyyyy more Prem points than any team outside the 'Big 4'. They have won the CL and got to the CL final, they have won 6 major trophies in the Prem era, (7 including 1992) far more again than any team outside the 'Big 4'. From memory no other club has more than 2, Spurs Villa and maybe Leicester I think have 2. But those trophies are all Lge Cups. Liverpool's include far more prestigious trophies as well more in quantity. Here's a link to help you on your way LDL http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/all-time-table/pl-years I'm amazed you don't know all this at least in outline, but I think you do, and just let Liverpool bias slip in there The Big 4 were the Big 4 for an excellent reason, they dominated football during the Sky era up to this year. The reason we have to abandon the 'Big 4' is because of your 'noisy neigbours' who have definitely kicked the doors in. Also Spurs, I think, join the party because of our recent good form, plus steady history in the Prem era, and great history overall. In fairness to Villa fans I have to point out they are still slightly ahead of Spurs in the Prem points table and wayyyyyyyyy ahead of City in 11th place. But Villa have fallen away in recent years, Spurs should overtake them in the next couple of seasons, and City's present status has smashed the 'Big 4' cartel. If Villa fans say it should be the 'Magnificent Seven' rather than the 'Sky Six' I could see that, but I think their star is on the wane, and so, ATM, the 'Sky Six' it is for me (and some others, I got the phrase from another site).
Possibly the fact that every year other than the last couple we've finished higher than Spurs and also won the champions league, as well as the Uefa cup, and domestic cups By your own logic why would you include Spurs in the list? I personally would definitely include Spurs - but if it's going on things won like you suggest surely they shouldn't be in it. I agree with the OP though that the top 4 is now the top 6. Although, Liverpool at present are probably 6th in the list
Well said Sky In case you don't know, LDL is a Man U fan who apparently spends most of his posting time on the Spurs board. That's his perogative of course, as who wouldn't want to hang out with Spurs fans rather than Man U glory hunters However, his anti-Liverpool knickers clearly showed through in the rubbish he posted on this occasion Liverpool have easily outperformed Spurs and City in the Sky era, but as you correctly say the 'Big 4' is no more, because of the recent shift in the power axis.
Good thread BTW. It's just a shame people can't seem to put their hatred towards a club aside to have a sensible debate.
Why anybody would want to embrace anything to do with SKY I fail to see. I am not interested in a SKY4, 6 or any other combination of spurious titles. Each football season should be treated on it's merits as should each game. A good game of football is what it's all about, teams in a perceived elite group do not necessarily always produce the best games to watch their only attribute being that they earn more money for SKY. Why pander to the lack of depth shown by many so called football fans who attach themselves to a club simply because of current success or perceived standing. The existence of the football leagues is dependent on all the teams who take part and all the players and fans, all contribute to the game in one way or another. Bollocks to SKY!
Fair enough mate - just happens that I sometimes have difficulty working out whether I detest Sky or Liverpool more!! Certainly no desire to cross swords with any fellow Spurs fans over the festive period!!
Ye are at yer best ever and we are not actually far behind ye being as bad as we are, lots of room for improvment for us though
Sky - Normally LDL isn't too bad re Liverpool (on here anyway), just having a bit of a Christmas dig maybe
Fair comments Spurf I always used the term 'Big 4' not the 'Sky 4' and to be fair so did Sky usually. People who talked of the 'Sky 4' often did that with an agenda I think. The 'Big 4' were clearly the Big 4 during the era 1992-2011. That era is now kaput, if people resent the term 'Sky Six' I understand that and don't mean to antagonise them, as I'm far from happy with a lot of what Sky has done. It's just the 'Sky Six' has a neat alliterative sound, but if I was to talk of the Big Six, that might get confusing, as it's then open to argument as to whether Everton and Villa are still bigger than Spurs or City. The Big 4 clearly referred to the Sky era, so maybe the Big Six could do too? I agree you could skip collective titles, and just take each season on its merits, but many people do like taking a longer term as well as shorter term view of clubs' status in the football hierarchy.
Relayer. I know a lot of Spurs fans can't stand Liverpool, and fair enough. I can't stand West Ham, but I hope I'd still acknowledge them is they ever did anything sufficient to warrant a claim of 'Big 4' 'Big 6' etc. Luckily all they're big on is failure, jealousy, delusion and bitterness, so I don't have to worry about assessing their claims to be in football's elite groupings
