Norwich come into the game in 9th place on 21 points, while Spurs are in 3rd place on 35 points. This will be the 76th time the two teams have met. Norwich City were founded in 1902 by three former Norwich Church of England Young Men's Society players. The club lost their amateur status in 1905 and joined the Southern League shortly afterwards. The first meeting between Spurs and Norwich came in April 1906 in the Southern League and the East Anglian club won 4-1 at White Hart Lane. The reverse fixture at Newmarket Road was won by Spurs 3-0. Vivian Woodward scored three goals for Spurs against Norwich that season. The clubs met for two further seasons in the Southern League, resulting in two wins for Norwich, a win for Spurs and a drawn match. Spurs joined the Football League for season 1908-09 and the next meeting with Norwich came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in January 1915 at "The Nest" in Rosary Road, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Canaries. Four friendlies were played between 1916 and 1925 with Spurs winning two games, Norwich one and one drawn game. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs came in the Second Division in December 1935 with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Lane, while Norwich won the reverse fixture 1-0 in April 1936 at their new home in Carrow Road. The clubs met for a further three seasons in Division Two resulting in four wins for Spurs and two for Norwich. During World War Two, Spurs & Norwich played two matches in the Football League South. An FA Cup fifth round match in February 1959 ended in a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane and Norwich pulled-off a 'giant killing' act by beating Spurs 1-0 in the replay at Carrow Road. The first meeting in the Top Flight of English Football came in October 1972 when a Martin Chivers goal at Carrow Road wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 win for Norwich. The clubs contested the 1973 Football League Cup Final at Wembley and a Ralph Coates goal was enough to bring the silverware to White Hart Lane. Martin Chivers scored a brace in Tottenham's 3-1 win against Norwich in the reverse First Division fixture at the Lane a week later. The clubs met regularly in Division One from season 1973-74 to 1991-92 with honours being generally even. Both Spurs and Norwich were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93, but the Canaries lost their top flight status after the 1994-95 season and returned for one season in 2004-05. Spurs won 5 of the 8 Premier League matches played with Norwich winning once and two drawn games. The most recent match between the clubs came in a pre-season friendly at Carrow Road in July 2008 with Darren Bent scoring four goals in a 5-1 Spurs win. During the summer, Norwich City signed Spurs defender Kyle Naughton on a season's loan. Overall, Spurs have won 33, Norwich have won 22 and 20 of the 75 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Norwich City v Tottenham Hotspur Matches 1906-2011 please log in to view this image They Played for Norwich & Spurs.... Blimey mate, you've certainly done your homework there ! BTW, Martin Peters, best 40 grand we ever spent. Played for us for 6 years which, I stand to be corrected, is twice as long as he played for you guys. What a player !
THFC6061 - don't suppose you want to break the stats down further and show Spurs record at Carrow Road only?
I only spotted 1 mistake:- "Both Spurs and Norwich were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93, but the Canaries lost their top flight status after the 2004-05 season." Actually, we lost our prem status in 1995. we returned for one season (2004-5) before slipping not only to the Championship but then down to League 1.
The first seven games Spurs played in Norwich ware at Newmarket Road "The Nest". The other 35 matches were at Carrow Road. All told, there have been 42 matches played with Norwich and Spurs both winning 16 games and the other 10 matches ending in draws. Norwich have scored 64 goals to Tottenham's 69.
I don't mean to be picky, and obviously we are talking about MY club not yours and so I am flattered you have shown such an interest, but Newmarket Road was not the nest. Newmarket Road was our first 'ground'. We then moved to The Nest (Near Riverside Road in Norwich) and then on to Carrow Road in the late 30's
impressed with your knowledge of norwich city! kenny is nit-picking slightly but is correct about the nest which was on rosary road. newmarket road was our first ground interesting to read that our record against spurs is not too shabby at all. encouraging...
I used to live in a house on St Leonards Road in Norwich. From the upstairs back windows you could still see some of the old terracing from the Nest dug into the chalk hillside.
kenny, one of my best mates lived on rosary road and his view from his bedroom window was pretty much overlooking where the old pitch would be. it was difficult not to stare and imagine how the bloody hell they managed to get 20,000+ people in there on a match day!!! it must have been seriously dangerous, especially with the chalk cliff face behind the goal
Aparently it was a well used tactic for the Norwich Full-Back to try and run any pacey wingers into the chalk-face. Just to slow them up a bit next time.
Out of interest, I just had a look at the site on Google Maps, on the satalite view. The pic on there was taken when they were building the new flats after demolition of the old Book warehouse. to the top right of the building site you can see the terracing I was referring to.
Cheers fella. I knew Spurs had a reasonable record at fortress CR compared to many clubs, just wanted to see how decent a record it was. Not bad at all. Over the years I have only seen Norwich beat Spurs twice! Once at the Lane 3-1, and once at CR in a league cup or FA Cup (Can't remember for certain) midweek game 2-0. All seems such a long time ago.
SPURS TEAM NEWS: Harry Redknapp says he's hopeful of Rafa van der Vaart featuring at Norwich tomorrow night (Tuesday, December 27). The Dutch forward was forced off at half-time of Thursday's draw against Chelsea with a hamstring problem but has been back in training at Spurs Lodge. Meanwhile, Harry reported that Ledley King came through the Chelsea match okay but he wouldn't have enough time to recover to feature at Carrow Road. Harry also ruled Jermain Defoe out with his hamstring injury and that he'd 'wait and see' on Younes Kaboul's hamstring problem. Speaking after training on Boxing Day, Harry said: "We're hoping Rafa will be fit and it looks like there's a chance he'll be okay. "Jermain isn't fit though, Ledley was okay after the Chelsea game but this one has come around too quickly for him. He's not fit. "We're not sure on Younes yet, we'll have to see how he is." Michael Dawson is on the road to full recovery from his Achilles injury while Tom Huddlestone (ankle) remains sidelined.
WALKER ON NORWICH: Kyle Walker said his friend and fellow full-back Kyle Naughton is enjoying his time at Norwich â and the Canaries could give us a âreal testâ on Tuesday night. The Kyles joined us from Sheffield United in the summer of 2009 and while Kyle Walker has established himself in the first team this season, Kyle Naughton has been impressing in Norwichâs fine start to the Premier League campaign. Paul Lambertâs men are 11th after the Boxing Day fixtures having lost just two matches at Carrow Road. Right-back Kyle has played 16 of Norwichâs 17 matches so far but cannot us face us tonight under the terms of his loan. âWe speak a lot,â said Kyle Walker, who will be tearing down his flank at Carrow Road. âHeâs said heâs enjoying it at Norwich. âWeâll prepare as we normally do and hopefully weâll get the right result. Norwich are doing well in the Premier League and if they continue playing how they are playing, theyâll give us a real test.â Kyle admitted to a few nerves in Thursday nightâs draw against Chelsea. âItâs probably the first game where Iâve felt a little nervous,â he said. âThatâs saying something because I donât normally get nervous. âThere was pressure but with the players weâve got, we donât take too much notice of that, we play our game and itâs generally pays off.â
