Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill is ready to offer £8million for Fulham’s unsettled striker Bobby Zamora - but faces a fight to make him move from London.

O’Neill wants a new target man and thinks the England cap would be perfect for the style he wants to play to turn round the fortunes of the Black Cats.

Zamora can leave Fulham where he has had a stormy relationship with Martin Jol, but the far-travelled forward is settled in the capital.

O’Neill could push the boat out and offer top terms, but the word from Zamora’s camp is that the next move is not just about money.

New boss O’Neill can only wait so long for Zamora as his second choice - Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic - is being pursued by rivals, headed by QPR.

Sunderland are also chasing Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse but German side Freiburg want a big fee although that may come down during the window - and as they face a possible relegation.

Be careful that chappy and co. are not around, they'd be on it quicker than Bruce at a burger van.

Zamora's game is all about confidence; he can be great when he has it and dire when he doesn't....

No lads he is just ****e with a capital ****e, we need a 10 to 15 (more if possible) goal striker not some 30 year old crock who might get us 5 or 6 a season leave well alone.

I can't stand Zamora - his whinging every time he's played against us - he has 1 good season (and I think he's 30 or 31) so £8m is way OTT for him IMO

There are so many others I'd rather have - Bendtner, on the other nights form, is better than Zamora

Firstlt, lets not get carried away with paper talk. Firstly how would they have any idea over the fee, and secondly the whole thing could be made up.

However, if O'Neill does buy a player people don't necessarily rate, it is absolutely imperative that the fans back the manager's decision and get right behind him.

Although I wasn't a huge O'Neill fan I have been massively impressed with what he has had to say, and undoubtedly the players seem to have been refreshed with the change. If we want him here for the long haul, building a team to be proud of we must support him to the hilt, even when he makes decisions we wouldn't necessarily make ourselves.
