I normally end up reading to at least page 100 when i read a new book. If i get bored by then, then i've read far enough that it's pointless to stop so i finish it anyway <laugh>

I think Jackson did a decent job of making movies that would appeal to the general public (obviously not BigGeordieDave) without pissing off the Tolkien geeks (I'm one I admit) too much.

I have a list of grievences from the trilogy that could fill a book but as a spectacle I still really enjoy them. I think the casting of Bilbo in the Hobbit is a masterstroke and the trailer has really got me amped up.

    This 100%

There is a bit of music in the soundtrack for the fellowship of the ring that you do not hear in the film that would be PERFECT for the elves arriving at the gates of Angband.

Sod this im going to start reading the book again :)

Totally agree. Especially the bit in bold ;) i listed three in my earlier post but could have gone on for far too long.

As for Beren and Luthien, would be great as their lineage goes all the way back round to Aragorn so could do a series of films following it back through to the LOTR. Tie in nicely with Strider telling a bit of the Lay of Beren and Luthien round the campfire under Weathertop in the first film :) (Sorry was that a bit to geeky? <laugh>)

No such thing as too geeky where Tolkien is concerned

I also really think they did a good job with the Dwarves' song in the trailer... Far over the Misty Mountains cold....

**** I think I need to re-read some Tolkien again

Not at all geeky, and then follow with the chilling unfolding of events as they spot the Nazgul meeting on the road in the distance as it did in the book.

In fact the fellowship is probably my favourite book of the series. Preferred the constant adrenaline inducing threatening atmosphere of the whole book as opposed to the grand battles of the two later books

It's my favourite too. It is one of my small complaints that ther brooding menace of Mordor and everything it represented never really got a chance in the films. They left the Shire and arrived in Bree like they barely been gone a couple of hours and there was none of the grim history unveiled in the chapter "The Shadow of the Past". Which along with "The Scouring of the Shire" were probably the two most important chapters for me.

Like you say the lions share of the action went into the other two books. I actually always found the Two Towers the hardest to get through and yet it was arguably the most action packed of the films.

I must admit I had watched the first movie before I read the first book. Thought the movie was pretty good, myself. Book was even better, naturally.

Hobbit is lacking one thing - Viggo Mortensen! I know he wouldn't have had a role, but y'know. Viggo's ace.

Being Finnish is a massive advantage if you decide to apparently. Tolkien based Elvish on that language (and Rohirrim on Middle English) as he was professor of both at Leeds.

Never been able to confirm how close they are to each other though!

Oh no, not again AH <laugh>

Seriously though but it wouldn't surprise me if Jackson ruined the canon of the stories further by working him in.

Not a Viggo fan then? <whistle>

He's been in punk bands, he writes, releases musics, and he sits on mountains painting. <whistle>

He may be in the second one. Apparently that is a newly written story to bridge the gap between the Hobbit and LOTR.

As a Tolkien nerd and a bit of a purist it is this film that worries me because they could totally bugger up the legacy.

There is a question of charisma and eye candy for the Hobbit though. Gandalf, Bilbo and thirteen dwarves are the main characters for the most part and they are not good looking and the dwarves were used slightly as comic effect in the LOTR films so they must be worried about this. Guess that is why they have Orlando back even though he wasn't in the book. Hope they don't build up his role though ... that would pee me off!

I believe Gimli and Legolas actually meet in the Hobbit movies - have a massive falling out and then pretend not to know each other by the time of LotR <whistle>

I think that's been changed now and both movies are 'The Hobbit' - I was more than a bit disapointed when I saw Thorin Oakenshiled... he should have a much bigger beard surely!

Is this Jackson trying to 'sex-up' some of the Dwarves? It's a worry.

Yeah agree entirely, don't think they should tamper with it at all. Hate it when film adaptations have extra bits in them that weren't part of the book. Unfortunately, as you say though, looks like they will, to sell the movie more so to speak. Hate Orlando Bloom, if I'm honest.
