I got that mate I bet it wasnt 'coloured' people who were the main complainants though And I bet you any money the BBC handbook will have 'coloured' as a no no/racist term and I bet it was a boardroom of white middle aged men who came to that conclusion
some people seem to spend their entire lives waiting around to be offended - btw the term coloured is generally regarded as non pc as we are all coloured (we all have a skin colour) so to say someone is coloured while referring to black people is singling them out as having a colour when we all have a colour - not my idea but apparently the thinking of the pc brigade - personally speaking i think the whole world is gone mad - bet there are thousands of black people laughing at the way the pc brigade have everyone tying themselves in knots trying to remain pc
I think the dictionary term of black is without colour. They say that black is the absence of light whereas white is all coloured light. So coloured therefore encompasses everything except black. Even the darkest mid Africans aren't black, they're just a dark brown. If people are so hung up over semantics like using the word coloured then surely they need to accept that there is no such thing as "black skin".
This. I think some people find coloured offensive cos it implies that white people are somehow 'normal' and everyone else has somehow been 'coloured' to make them different. It's a bit OTT in my view, but then if people do have strong opinions then given Hansen's position, and the big salary he gets paid to be in the public eye, he probably should have made sure he wasn't going to offend anyone before he opened his mouth. From what I've read, I don't think anyone would have minded if he'd said black people, so why try to be clever if the simple term will get the job done?
I was watching it last night too, and if you watch the clip, you see Lee Dixon actually starts to look very uncomfortable when he uses the word "coloured", and looks at Lineker in a "oh ****.." kind of way when he repeats it... Still, it's a load of bollocks. ****in PC brigade again.
It means I agree with what you said. Some people do have that chip on their shoulder than means they will take offence at just about anything. But then someone who gets paid a lot of money to be in the public eye should be aware of that, and should try to avoid making comments that will be picked up by the pedants. You're supposed to say black. Let's call a spade a spade. Just don't call a black person a spade
Both positive and negative discrimination is wrong and has no place in the public domain. Just saying.
What is wrong with the word "coloured"? As I said, if they want to get technical about it then people shouldn't be called black either because they are dark brown. It's ****ing stupid.
It really is all rather pathetic. People are different. Yet more and more we're not allowed to use any words that somehow in some way can be construed to allude to that difference.
Anyone with more than one brain cell could see that Alan Hansen wasn't being offensive. People just look for an excuse to be offended and to play the victim. It's pathetic.
