I agree that it should be separate, but in some cases the two are inextricably linked. Sadly, thanks to where this WC is taking place and the particular people deciding how it operates, this situation is exacerbated.

Unfortunately FIFA - and specifically Collina - has insisted that all officials are based in the US training camp. So unless there is some pragmatism shown, these offers will not change the situation sadly.

The sad reality is that certain people, Trump and Infantino top of that list, have forced a political agenda onto the tournament from day one. It was never Trump's intention for this to be a celebration of sport and international camaraderie, it was meant to be a celebration of Donald Trump, and anyone who doesn't like that is either ridiculed or excluded.

I thought Qatar would be the most politicised world cup in history, but somehow this one has topped it.
