After reading that I hope the fa do the right thing and not ban Ballard for future games, we could've easily won that game with a few more goals and effectively strengthened our European push. Have we have this matt donohue as an official this season as he seemed to have made a massive mistake on var

So how can var be wrong as that is what it was there to take away (mistakes)instead of making more the referee didnt think it was a foul and they interceded . There was no slow motion but it could be seen as a push (which is what ussually happens ) so why intervene for nothing and stop/ruin the game

Dean Slams “Soft” Red Card as VAR Controversy Erupts in Wolves vs Sunderland Clash

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has launched a scathing critique of match officials following a controversial red card in the clash between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland, branding the decision “overly harsh” and accusing VAR of unnecessary interference.

The flashpoint came during the first half with Sunderland holding the lead. Defender Dan Ballard was involved in an aerial duel with Tolu Arokodare when replays showed the centre-back pulling a handful of his opponent’s hair. Referee Paul Tierney initially allowed play to continue but was instructed by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After reviewing the footage, Tierney produced a straight red card for violent conduct, reducing Sunderland to ten men and dramatically shifting the momentum of the match.

Speaking in his latest column and television analysis, Dean did not hold back.

“Shame on the referee and VAR”
“They are just disgraceful bodies against us”

Dean acknowledged that hair-pulling is technically an offence under the laws of the game but insisted the context did not justify a dismissal.

“It’s violent conduct on paper, but the way it happened here – a brief tug in an aerial challenge – doesn’t warrant sending a player off,” he explained.

The former official also suggested that Tierney may have been influenced by the increasing scrutiny surrounding such incidents, arguing that VAR is pushing referees into overly cautious decisions.

“Spot on from Mike Dean”

The decision proved pivotal. Sunderland, forced to play with ten men for the majority of the game, struggled to maintain their advantage as Wolves capitalised on the numerical superiority.

Dean’s comments have reignited debate over VAR’s role in subjective calls, with critics arguing that the technology is undermining referees’ on-field authority and disrupting the natural flow of matches.

He added:

“We’ve seen similar incidents go unpunished or result in yellows. This feels inconsistent and robs the game of flow.”

Fans and pundits were quick to echo his sentiments, pointing to comparable incidents across the league. One frequently cited example involved Lisandro Martínez, who was previously sent off for a similar offence against Dominic Calvert-Lewin—a decision that also divided opinion.

The controversy once again highlights a growing concern within the game: while the laws are clear, their interpretation remains deeply subjective. As VAR continues to play a central role in modern football, calls for greater consistency—and perhaps restraint—are only getting louder.

Iirc this all started earlier in the season with women's football, a player got skinned and she pulled the opponent's pony tail yanking her off her feet....red card issued and fair enough.
The pulling of hair has filtered into general football and on today's evidence has already got out of hand.
There is no way Ballards incident was anything like the other one and having seen it from several angles in bemused this has ended with a red card.
How many times are the officials going to balls up decisions with Var, it's getting beyond belief.

The sooner clubs start kicking off properly about VAR and holding the Premier League to task over it the better. 2 points dropped today say, so we miss out on Europe and X amount of million pounds in league placings because of it. Sue the PL for it! Yes, extreme but **** it, it's there to stop bullshit calls but it's creating more!

Comments like Dean's just annoy me more because the PGMOL will only come out and defend the ref because they know they can't do otherwise!
