Pardew:

“Because he is so quick, the crowd think he can just beat the full-back by racing him on the outside all the time, but he can’t do that, he’d be too one-dimensional.”

“I think he’s only young and he’s still learning. He’s very young in term of his time playing, he’s hardly played. Our fans need to be patient with him as I and the staff need to be at times because we know what he can do.”

“Scoring goals is the next step for him, he’s got to look like he’s going to score a goal, getting in on the far post, cutting inside and releasing shots like Jonas does for us on the other side. He actually has to threaten the goal.” <doh>

It's true

Obertan's greatest strength is his age. He's still young and has plenty of time to develop his game. I'd say he's improved since his time at United

3. Obertan has fantastic ability, he just needs to get his head sorted out.

I think people are bit too harsh on him though. There's times where he will accelerate past people, weave his way through the box and play a decent ball across the ground.

This.

He isn't up to scratch yet, but he need the playing time to get there. I don't think he'll ever be a world beater, but he's got potential to be quite good.

Plus, it's nice to have Grendel in the side :)

how many times have we seen players have a so so first season then come good the next (seen many go the other way as well) i'll reserve my judgement for when he's had a season behind him,yes he's incredibly frustrating but don't see the point or the advantage of giving him a hard time.

It's gotten to the point where people jump on every single mistake he makes and exaggerate his performance, like we used to do with Perch even when he had an OK game. Obertan's showed promise (Arsenal, Bolton, Fulham, Blackburn, Man Utd, Stoke games he was good), the manager isnt going to give up on him after 4 months, lets see what he can do over a season. Remember Colo's first year?

I hope he's written this weakness down so we know what to do when Obertan's species decide Earth is a suitable planet for relocation (as John carew's penalty destroyed their own home world)...

I fail to see why Pards quote gets a facepalm. If Obertan was English and came through the academy he'd be getting a lot more time from fans. He's very frustrating so far, but there's undoubtably talent there. No real alternative so he has time to improve.

These times are too much of a rarity. Not being able to cross has nothing to do with his head, it is 100% his ability, or lack of.

I can only hope he improves massively.

10. Actually no, there are times where he should cross but decides to hang on to the ball. It seems he lacks the bottle to try, in case he fails.

He put in a fantastic ball to Ba for our first goal vs Stoke.

Yes he's frustrating but he's better than Sammy, who's our only real alternative at RM. Obertan shows flashes of brilliance and he's been no worse than Ben Arfa this season, he's just had more games to frustrate people. I still think he'll come good!

People are jumping on the bandwagon and slating the kid after 15 games. I think that deserves a <doh> more than anything else. (And a massive <doh> to the miserable gits over on nufc.com, who are now beginning to slate him in every match report).

Yes, he can be incredibly frustrating but for me he's shown enough promise (Arsenal, Stoke, Man Utd, Fulham, he was a contender for our best player) to merit staying in the squad, and I didn't realise how much we missed his outlet down the right until he was out injured. Give him time, he has the ability to be tremendous, it's just honing his talent and boosting his confidence enough to make him realise it. Imagine how de-moralising it must be sitting on the bench/being a cup player for 3 seasons. Football fans are incredibly impatient these days, remember how dump Colo was in the relegation season? Remember how frustrating Jonas was (all lovely footwork, no end product)? And he's now one of the most important players in the squad.

Give. Him. TIME.

He is starting to annoy me with the lack of end product, but I still think give him time and he'll improve dramatically. He's quite young and seems willing to learn, which will aid his development imo. His main problem is to get rid of the reputation he seems to have got from his time at Man United.

1152 minutes of football with the toon and 0 shots on target. That's ****e!

However AP has stated scoring is what they're working on with him so at least they're addressing that fact.
I hope he improves as in my humble opinion he's just a carbon copy of Routledge at the moment, except nearly 3 times more expensive. Whether he will improve remains to be seen. Fingers crossed.

He has actually come very close a couple of times, nearly scored v Spurs and Stoke and nearly chipped Given in the Villa match.
