Haven’t seen every game this season but three times I’ve watched Wrexham I’m astounded they’re as high as 6th. What are they good at and how do they win so many games?

Despite some late pressure they never really looked like scoring and we should’ve had the game wrapped up by then anyway.

An appealing set of fixtures on paper and some key players returning what could possibly go wrong?!
Agree. I think they have looked awful every time we have played them.

There seems to be some teams we match up very well against and some we're by and large terrible against. E.g. Millwall and Wrexham we seem to do very well, Stoke and QPR we always seem to struggle. Thankfully the former two are the more relevant..

I do think it is a weak league this year, helped by the fact Leicester are poor, Southampton started very poorly and Ipswich haven’t blown away the division as I expected.

Millwall, us and Wrexham probably don’t make the play offs in many Championship seasons, but we’ve all been very consistent at picking up points

The play offs are there to be won for any team this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s one of those rare years when the final is 5th v 6th. I expect Coventry to go up then one of Millwall, Boro and Ipswich to join them. The 3rd is anyone’s guess out of us, Wrexham, Southampton and the two that miss out on automatics.

Too close to call.

Throw in Sheff Utd too who made the PO final last year.

Often the team just missing out on top two slumps and blows up in the Play Offs so hope that happens to Ipswich.

Post-match reaction

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson:

"First off we made too many mistakes in our own back third with the ball and we gave a good team possession in dangerous areas. We made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes with the ball.

"And then in the second half we were loads better. We conceded but we had good control.

"We got the goal back and on another day we go and get the second. But listen, it wasn't our night, we weren't at our best in that first half and we've just got to move on to Friday."

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirović:

"It's a very important three points and a very big victory against Wrexham who are a very good team.

"They have already shown all season they are playing good football, especially at home. They are very dangerous.

"Credit to the lads because I think they played a very good game."

Yeah he scored one this season against Boro. There was also no issue with the pen it was a great save. It happens sometimes. Pandur has saved two for us, one was from a great pen one was from a terrible one, they're both saves!
No there was an issue with the pen. He telegraphed his intentions. I agree it was well struck but there was no kidology at all.

Sometimes telegraphing IS the kidology. Keeper has to judge whether you really are going that way 'surely it's not that obvious' etc.

To be fair, Gelhardt and McBurnie both had 100% penalty records for us at the time. Gelhardt had taken maybe four or five(?) and scored them all. I'd generally be happy with either of them taking it.
Fair enough, and from Jakirovic’s quotes it seems as though his only rule is that the player fouled shouldn’t take the kick, rather than McB necessarily being the designated taker.

Interesting given Oli said that if Joff was fouled he COULD take it!

From what I saw with McB's game today, it may be that he was suffering a niggling injury.

The force of his passing & shooting was far weaker than normal, and his pressing was less pronounced and energetic than normal.

His offering to let Gelhart have the penalty shot may have been communicated well before the event occured as McB may have realized and believed he may well have not been confident of making a good job of it himself.

Well Jakirovic seems quite laid back but I hope he gives them both a rocket up the arse for this. McB is our penalty taker. If on the pitch, he should take the pens.
Whilst I agree with you, if it goes in, then there’s no issue, plus he’s just banged that free kick in, so should have hammered the penalty a lot better than he did.
What happens if McB misses, do we then say Gelhardt should have taken it.
If Gelhardt’s going to take penalties, then he needs to practice hitting the top corner, or at least not at a good height for the keeper!

Apparently he was ill overnight and they weren't sure if he was going to start or not

My impression of McB was that he was crap, but then in the highlights saw he did provide the ‘assist’ for the pen. And I wasn’t watching as carefully as usual because I was watching Slough v Hampton at the same time (great win - up the Beavers!). So you’re probably right about the injury. Against Millwall he had looked back to his best.
