According to the Sunday papers, Sharp has a £1.75m release clause in his contract. Now if we could get him for that money or even £2m, that would be great business.
£3 million does seem an awful lot for us to pay for one player at this level BUT, If £3 million is our budget, why not spend it on one player who can make a really big difference. With all injuries returning we don't need anything at all aside from maybe a goalkeeper, and we don't want to upset the harmony in the club by bringing too many in. Secondly, (assuming we sign some players for other positions) the calibre of player we need to be signing will not be happy to come in and sit on the bench as back up, which means unsettling a great team that doesn't need changing. Also I don't think we'll get many strikers who are good enough to match our ambition with much less than £3 million in this day and age, and an effective striker is probably to most important thing for us to get. It makes sense to me, a proper goalscoring striker is all we need, someone to take some of the weight off Fryatt's shoulders, and god forbid if Fryatt ever got injured what would we do then? I say we should go for it, splash the cash on one player who really can make a big difference to us.
I guess if he does want to come and we find the 1.75m if true then its all good. Fryatt played well after he was dropped and he knew Waghorn\McLean were chomping on the bit to get into the team. I think he will flourish with more competition for places.
i think they have it wrong there. an offer was made to donny for that amount But Billy Sharp was quoted in the Yorkshire Post a while back that he has a £3 million transfer option in his contract. In other words any club that offers that amount then Donny have to let him talk to that club.
I can see this happening. The price is another thing, £3m mentioned is too high, but his goal scoring ability is not in dispute in my mind, so if we want to make the best of this extraordinary season we do all we can to get him in. He has been valued at £2m+ plus before and is back at that value now, his stats for Doncaster are 40 goals in 80 games in mixed seasons, and overall he has kept the club going with not a lot of talent behind him. We need goal getting security (when injuries etc kick in) and Billy Sharp would give us that.
Saints bid £2.5m in the summer, but weren't allowed to talk to him, they had to go to £3.25m to trigger his release clause, which they did, but he turned them down anyway.

Just heard it from a Leicester supporting mate of mine who's usually well informed that Nigel Pearson will be going in for Billy Sharp in January. French Tickler especially I'd like to hear your views on this??
From the mirror too: "Big-spending Leicester are ready to snap up Doncaster striker Billy Sharp in a £1.75million deal, writes Alan Nixon . Boss Nigel Pearson is set to take on promotion rivals Southampton for Sharp, who has a release clause that kicks in on New Year’s Day. And the financial power of the Foxes, who ironically face Sharp's Rovers today, should be persuasive."
For £3mill i think that'll leave them as front runners. Can't see many Championship clubs forking that much out.
That's a weird one, I don't remember every seeing anyone's release clause amount drop like that, it's not like his contract is coming to an end.
I have a similar feeling Soton will drop away to the play off place, it will then be open to who goes up I think with W.H. Billy Sharp would be a good addition to the squad, 3M might be a bit heavy for him, but if he gets goals then worth it.
well if its a straight choice between Negative Nige and attacking Barmby then the answer is simple. over to you PB>
