I am perplexed by what Nigel expects from Guly. He doesn't play as an inside forward. He does not play on the wing. He does not play as an out and out striker. He doesn't play in midfield. He plays in a void and if I was him I would be lost at times as well. Guly will get a lot of flack again today from those who only watch him when he is on the ball but don't watch the other things he does. I've played football to a reasonable standard but I would be at a loss to explain what Nigel expects of him. Perhaps someone who has played the game to a decent level can explain his role. As it stand at the moment he has become the whipping boy because nobody knows what his role is. So somebody help us to understand Guly and to give him a bit of a chance. This thread is not so people can criticise him it is so that we can understand him.
Guly has not played well for quite a few games, but it appears Adkins thinks we have no other options either up front or wide-right at the moment. Clearly, its also a problem that if a player like Guly is out of form right now, there is no pressure on him to be dropped in place of someone else. No Barnard, no Connolly (who I think we have missed more than many fans appreciate) and Adkins doesn't trust De Ridder enough yet.
A good question, and not one I know the answer to, agree with CBK's post as well, we seriously lack quality in depth, we were playing best when Guly/Chaplow was on the right with Connoly up front, but obviously not really possible right now, happy with the point though as long as we beat them at home
I do find it very interesting that Adkins is happy to play Schniederlin on the right, and have two wingers on the bench. I have a feeling Guly is playing because Adkins does not want to change shape to a 4-5-1, and Guly is all we have to partner Lambert up front.
Thank god the transfer window is around the corner, because this blip could get worse if we lose another key player through injury. In the cold light of day, one bit of bad defending has cost us really... however, I felt if Adkins had gone for it more when 1-0 up, then that Pompey goal would have been a consolation at best.
Not sure he likes the cold weather or the cold reception from the skate he was totally out of sorts and it highlights that we are in need of reinforcement for Ricky in Jan.His shocking lack of commitment when faced with putting his head on the line for the skate goal was unforgivable and today of all days his display came across as half hearted
I think Guly is expected to perform a maverick role and feed off Lamberts excellent control play and we all know that Guly is capable of that on ocassions...today wasn't one
Connolly is class shame he is 34 and always injured, as for barny he'll be locked up soon. So we need two strikers..
